Description of Up Periscope!

Search & Destroy and Up! Periscope are two early submarine sims have a lot in common even though they were produced by publishers who lived thousands of miles across: Search & Destroy was designed and released in the U.S. while Up Periscope! was released in Europe. Both are excellent submarine simulations although Search and Destroy had a more action-oriented focus than its cousin.

Up Periscope! is better in terms of realistic feel, game interface, and has more interesting missions. It also originated a few new ideas that were not implemented well, such as the concept of variable visibility. Further, the user had to make several periscope, radar, or sonar contacts at different times to generate an accurate shooting solution. A minimum of two marks was required to fire using the TCD in manual. This added to the realism and difficulty but the drawback was once you fired at a specific ship in a convoy, you couldn't transfer the settings to the next ship for a second shot.

I remember this game by title alone from when I was a kid. Might've been a bit before my time.

Now I use the term "Up Periscope" to imply arousal at any available juncture.

Whoa! I forgot all about this game!(⌒▽⌒)
I haven't played this since the year it came out; I must've been about 12 years old!
I remember being like, "What? subs can run on batteries?!" and then a second later, I was like, "What?! subs can run on diesel?!" Jeez, I was a total idiot in 1986! lol

I noticed that if you display the "big chart" while playing the game in a patrol mission, you can then move your sub to spot enemy ships very quickly instead of waiting hours to spot a ship in real-time... But does this mean its not possible to spot enemy ships unless you use the "big chart? Is it not possible to spot ships in real-time?

I used to play this on my Apple 2 clone. I got pretty good on it, but haven't played it in decades. I don't suppose it's available for my kindle HDX is it?

You need to write the controls for the online version on your browser. I can't figure out how to use it!!!!!!

my favourite sub simulator till silent service 2 arrived. I still remember the silent moments waiting for the torpedo to hit the target.
