Description of Cosmo Police Galivan II: Arrow of Justice SNES

Cosmo Police Galivan 2: Arrow of Justice is (besides a mouthful) an adequate but not great sentai-inspired beat-em-up. This game and the property have a lot of potential that could have been built upon and expanded, but after the second installment, the Galivan franchise seems to have disappeared.

You play as one of three “Cosmo Police”, each of whom has slightly different stats which affect their movesets. As this armored brawler, you fight your way through an army of evil alien invaders across 15 stages.

Though there are a handful of different enemies with interesting designs, you'll never fight more two at once, and Galivan uses the “same enemy, different color” scale of difficulty for its baddies. There are effective strategies to be used against the different enemies, and figuring them out is rewarding, but the lack of multi-player in story-mode makes it a tedious affair. There is a 2P versus mode, but it’s very roughly implemented.

Galivan is repetitious in every sense. Each level, from an evil circus taken over by aliens to the inside of a space monster, has a cool concept that never gets beyond a single screen's worth of background design that scrolls endlessly behind the linear path to the stage exit. There is also an issue of difficulty-curve: Galivan doesn't really have one, once you've figured out the weaknesses, because you're just fighting slightly more powerful versions of the same half-dozen bad guys throughout the whole game. The boss-difficulty peaks in the middle of the game with an insanely hard frogman, while the final boss can be effortlessly thrown around his throne-room without taking more than a couple hits for the better part of the ten minutes it takes to beat him.

I like the concept of Galivan and I would love to have seen more done with the property, but it's a mediocre game at best and serious brawler fans will find it severely wanting.
