Metroid II: Return of Samus
Game Boy - 1991
Description of Metroid II: Return of Samus Game Boy
Metroid II: The Return of Samus is the return of the first video game bounty-hunting, laser-shooting heroine, Samus Aran, during her peace-keeping mission to the planet SR388. That mission, specifically, is to destroy all of the parasitic Metroid creatures who are threat to the galaxy. This action platformer shows many firsts in the series, the Spazer, Plasma Bean, the Spider Ball, and, among other things, the ability to crouch. There is no map, that didn't appear until the next game Super Metroid, so if you're not using a guide don't be surprised if you get lost in the claustrophobic caves of SR388.
Metroid II was made by Nintendo's Research and Developement 1 (R&D1) team that was responsible for Donkey Kong, Dr. Mario, Kid Icarus, and the original Metroid for NES. The music adds to the creepiness of the corridors, but is not as catchy or ambient as the soundtrack of the NES original. The graphics show a lot for only being able to show four different shades of pixels. The hallways of the game can get monotonous (again, use a map), but the end boss is one of the more impressive sprites seen on the Game Boy.
Metroid II is one of the essential and more ambitious games for the original Game Boy, and was voted 85th best Nintendo game of all time by Nintendo Power. The game was remade through the unofficial AM2R: Return of Samus and officially reimagined as Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS. Oh, and don't forget to stock up on missiles.
