NHL Stanley Cup
SNES - 1993
Description of NHL Stanley Cup SNES
NHL Stanley Cup, known as Super Hockey in Europe, is an ice hockey game for the Super Nintendo released in 1993. It is by far the most unique ice hockey game for the system. NHL Stanley Cup uses the Super Nintendo's trademark Mode 7 graphics mode. This allows a layer in the background to be scaled to create a 3D effect that looks like a real hockey rink with goal lines, blue line, a center red line, and logos all rotating in perspective of the player. This effect was used effectively in games such as Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, Pilotwings, and Yoshi's Safari. The players have their perspective changed similar to the baddies in Doom. NHL Stanley Cup was developed by Sculptured Sofware, the creators of NCAA Basketball for SNES, which featured a similar Mode 7 presentation.
The game features the real names of the current NHL teams of the day, but not the names of the players. The game did not have the NHLPA license to use such names. However, #99 for Los Angeles, #66 for Pittsburgh, and #91 for Detroit have some better skills and are more likely to score. The controls take advantage of all of the SNES's buttons like options for a slap shot, wrist shot, passing, and dumping the puck on offense and multiple checks on defense.
The game feature penalties like slashing caused by a stick check or icing caused by dumping the puck before the red line. The game can be enjoyed with exhibition, season, or playoff modes. This game came out during the NHL's expansion of the 1990s, featuring the brand new Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and the now-defunct Hartford Whalers.
Stanley Cup was an interesting look at what 3D games were capable of. Gamers who aren't hockey fans or nostalgic for their childhoods may not be interested, but the charm of Mode 7 shows how far technology has come.
