The Adventures of Batman & Robin
SNES - 1994
Description of The Adventures of Batman & Robin SNES
One of the frequent complaints about Batman games prior to Arkham Asylum is that you never feel like Batman. While The Adventures of Batman & Robin tries to offer the Batman experience with a wide range of Bat-gadgets, including Baterangs, grapnel shot, night vision, smoke-bombs, and knock-out spray, this game fails to deliver for a number of reasons.
Rather than the swift martial artist scouring Gotham for criminals and swooping down from rooftops to stop bad guys, Batman moves like he's fat and out of shape.
The game also likes changing the rules on you, where in one level Batman may be able to punch bad guys and leave them knocked out, the next level he may not have a punch at all and bad guys are only left stunned for a moment.
Boss-fights are long, repetitive, and unforgiving (seriously, after a tedious roller coaster section with no checkpoints at the end of level one, you have to roll-kick Joker in the shins for nearly two whole minutes).
The sprites and backgrounds are all very well done in the style of Batman the Animated Series (the game was developed prior to the relaunched Adventures of Batman & Robin series, hence Robin's conspicuous absence from most of the game). Unfortunately, that may not be enough to make this hodge-podge string of villainous vignettes worth the effort and frustrations of even a hardcore Batman aficionado.

This game is based on the TV series with the same name, one of the classics that changed how people do cartoons at the time, and thanks to it we now have the DC animated movies.
Now, about the game: it was produced by Konami, the same behind the Castlevania series and so many other good platform games. The animation is incredibly fluid, the gameplay is pretty good and the soundtrack comes straight from series. It is a hidden gem.
