I ran the original Eamon game and designed a mansion adventure on a Franklin Ace 1000 (Apple clone) in the 1980's.

Eamon is notable for being one of the first adventure games designed to be modular, with expansion packs written by users forming an integral part of the game experience. A master disk called the "Main Hall" is used to manage player characters and to facilitate their transfer between individual adventures. The character retains his or her attributes and statistics from adventure to adventure, as well as up to four weapons.

Because it was modular, gamers could write their own adventures and share them with others, much in the same way DOOM! WAD files were hacked together and shared online. However, because it was written primarily for the Apple ][ and ASB, it had problems running on the Apple ][ GS, and the ASB emulators for the early Macs kept crashing randomly when user-made adventures were being played. Same problems happened with the PC version, which is why very few of the Guild Adventures got ported along with the main game. And with text adventures on the way out in favor of fancy graphics, and with Wolf3D and DOOM! just around the corner, most PC coders felt it was a waste of time to debug the game code to make it more crash-proof.

But as Daemonhawke says, best way to play this game beyond the PC port is to grab a good Apple ][ Emu and go suck down the EAG archives.

EAMON is a game system written for Apple ][ computers in AppleSoft BASIC. It is public domain. This is a good conversion, but, there are over 200 adventures written for the system and only a few have been ported to the PC. The best way to enjoy this system is to grab yourself an Apple ][ emulator and download the entire set of EAMON disk archives from the EAMON Adventurer's Guild Online! Loads of fun!
