I got it running by installing Oracle VM Virtualbox, then downloading the Virtualbox Additions package. Download win 95 Iso, the nightmare ned game .bin, then make a new virtual machine in Virtualbox. Right click your new Win 95 Virtual Machine, go to settings - storage - under "controller IDE" click the little CD icon with the green + on it, the one on the left, then add nightmare ned .bin hit OK then start up; it should be in My Computer and you can install from there have fun!!

Use PCemu with windows 98 and it worked fine. Installed and ran fine. PCemu emulates the IBM PC so it's like running an actual old computer with win 98 on it !

@Ron: Thank you very much for providing a way to play this game on modern systems!

This game is available for download at The Collection Chamber--the version there should work.

Hey y'all!
I actually managed to get the game to work!
I'm using Windows 98 (second edition) via VirtualBox on my MacBook Pro.
I downloaded the Ned file from here, extracted the file via "The Unarchiver" (you can find it in the App Store) and then loaded the ".cue" file to the VirtualBox. That was it!
I was able to install it just fine and everything seems to be working smoothly! I hope this helps anyone who's been having difficulties :)
Have fun!

Is this actually a proper copy of the game? I can't get this to work, not even in Windows 95 running DOSBox. This is one tough game to get to work.

Has someone found a way to make this work? I really hope someone has the answer!

So... I've found a easier way to install the game for windows 10(possibly windows 7/8), but still no luck to play, if anyone can play it in Windows 10, please comment.

You can emulate the game .cue/.bin with Daemon Tools or convert them to .iso. Use otvdm/winevdm and execute "otvdmw.exe" and search for the setup of the game and execute it, you can do this while the game is being emulated on daemon tools. The installer will show, it may take some time but it will install, and that's it. I've found a compressed version with "upx" of the NITENED.EXE and SMACKW32.dll in a russian forum, the error message disappeared but still doesn't open.
I just hope someone could make it work.

I downloaded it, it wasn't working on Windows10, so I followed the instructions PETER SWINKELS gave, but the problem is that the Installer doesn't open. I converted de bin/cue images to ISO and then extracted them with 7zip, and again followed the instructions PETER gave and it actually works, it took some time but it was installed. The problem now is that when the install ended it showed an error message and I still can't play, the game .exe show a lot of .dll that it need and the program Is3Engine doesn't work too. So anyone can help with that?

I found a way to install Nightmare Ned on 64-bit Windows. This page https://reactos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10988 refers to a 32-bit Setup program that can replace the Setup.exe that comes with the game. It can be downloaded from here: http://toastytech.com/files/Is3Engine.zip - just copy it to the folder containing Setup.exe.

I am definitely hoping that this works! I have been looking forward to replaying this game and I still have the disc copy too but have been unable to play on my old sony vaio and unfortunately my current laptop does not have a disc drive. I can actually hear this game in my head when I think about it and absolutely love all the levels. EEEEEk I hope it works!

Oh my god, I remember hearing about this in third grade and thinking it was some kind of edgy schoolyard rumor. I almost can't believe this is real seeing it 15 over years later. This is so surreal. Thank you, uploaders! I'm definitely trying this one out!

absolutely loved this game as a kid!! found it so addictive! literally downloading now, really hope I don't have difficulty playing as I want to play it so bad eeeeeek

If anyone playing this game experiences random crashes and is playing this in an emulator/virtual machine try reducing the emulated CPU speed. The game is meant to be played on a Pentium I at a speed of 90mhz to 133mhz.

Hi, anyone wishing to play animated segments from the game contained in the *.smk files on the game's cd-rom image can Google "RAD Game Tool's Smacker" and go to
http://www.radgametools.com/smkdown.htm to download and install "The RAD Video Tools".

Just buy the game on Amazon it's totally worth it.

Can someone PLEASE help me figure out how to play this. all i have after I extract is this- Nightmare.Ned.BIN 665,695KB and this- Nightmare.Ned.cue 1KB. All I managed to do was accidentally make a separate drive out of it, which I don't even know how, and when I try and find it in virtual box it doesnt show up. The tutorials and info pages aren't that big a help. they just tell me how to set up VB. This is driving me crazy. Please help!

Has anyone else been getting persistent problems with freezing? The freezing occurs either after the intro or upon entering the first world. I am running a Windows 95 emulator using VirtualBox with 512 MB of RAM.

This game scared the shiiiit out of me as a kid, which feels silly now. I still think the visual aesthetic is particularly striking and a bit uncanny at times, in a good way. Gives the game atmosphere, eh?
