Correction on my #10 above:

10.) Keep your Protection From Evil spell (C-1-4) activated to protect being drained by Specters and Vampires. ( Correction: Note that Wraiths can also drain your levels.)

Awesome Game! Had it on the C-64. But this version is a different dungeon map:
Tips that can help:
1.) In the beginning of the game, keep hitting "S" to stay near the first inn, until you get to at least level 3. (8000 ex. points.) You can than go down the stairs and stay there until about 16000 ep points.

2.) Get a ring of regeneration early, and than you can go right and than up some spaces at level 2, which will get you to the flashing light box. Spend some time here to get gold and trade that in for experience points.

3.) The most important attributes seem to be intelligence for spell casting, high constitution for hit points, and dexterity to be able to run away from unwanted battles.

4.) They grey mistic cubes can force you to a random level at any time, and when they do, it is often a lot higher than your character. Use them wisely! Don't even go in them without a Scroll of Rescue and your Detect Traps spell turned on! Remember, duration spells can wear off when you least expect! Check them constantly and keep your Detect Traps duration spells activated.

5.) Even if a low level dragoon breaths fire and especially if he attacks first, you will often die, even if you have a pretty high level character.

6.) I have had chest explosions of over 100 points lost at level 8 So if you are on level 8, have at least 120 points for your constitution to feel safe,

7.) You can only get weapons of protection over +100 from very high level kings on very high level thrones.

8.) I recommend staying at a dungeon level that is at least 3 levels BELOW your character's level (i.e, if you are a level 9, character don't go deeper into the dungeon than level 6.)

9.) Holy Symbol at level 6 is the most powerful combat spell. It works about 75% of the time on both living and undead monsters (C-6-3) Raise Dead (C-6-2) is the most powerful duration spell. It will bring you back from the dead if you die, but only seems to work twice per playing session at most!

10.) Keep your Protection From Evil spell (C-1-4) activated to protect being drained by Specters and Vampires.

Correction: the spell that can kill you is level 5. not 6. it is the 6th spell called plague. It doesn't kill, anything undead, and it had a chance to kill the non-undead target, doesn't do anything, or instantly kills you.

Other fun facts I learned about telengard:

You can press f4 anywhere, making the sv trick even more powerful.

As long as you enter level 50 with a scroll of rescue you can escape to level 1 by entering a cube and teleporting to level 1. You can then find a tavern to exchange your gold for exp before you use the scroll of rescue.

If you carry enough gold to level up more than twice, the exp you gain will be enough to level up once and get to the next level -1, so as soon as you gain 1 more exp you will level up again.

At a certain point of gold or exp, it will begin to count in weird mathematical sequences.

At level 6 the 6th spell you can use can 1 shot enemies, but it can backfire and kill you.

MATTAKAR said wraths can reduce levels, which is true, but vampires can also reduce levels and they can paralyze you, making them one of my least favorite enemies to deal with. Spectre can also reduce your levels, but they cannot paralyze you.

Demons, dragons, and hobbits as far as I know are the only non-undead enemies with abilities. Demons can use their sword and whip, dragons can breathe fire, and hobbits steal from you very commonly. I heard it's also possible for other enemies to steal from you, but I said it is a hobbit ability due to how annoying common they do that.

There is another cube close to the first tavern, left twice, and then up until you reach it.

Super close to the start tavern, go left twice and down 1 to reach the goodly ale inn. I love to walk in between the two areas in the start of the game because you are always close to a tavern.

If you are too low level to go down to level 50, level 2 from the start tavern has an easy way to get to a gold box and a throne for weaker king enemies and increasing your stats. Gold box is right once, and up until you reach it. The throne is left from the gold box once, and then up until you reach the throne.

You can read at a throne, and it will make your stats can go up or down. If you use the sv trick carefully, you can get max stats, but it might take a while.

I'm going to stop posting for now but if you have any questions ask me.

Something else I learned was the location of certain things at level 50. You can easily access a cube to get there by going down once, and right until you reach the cube. Here is the level 50 data: L=left, R=right, U=up, D=down
Level 50 cube from center:
RRUUURURU
Level 50 Throne from center:
RRURRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Holy altar from center:
RRRURRRRRRRRDLD
Keep in mind these are all locations based off of the location you start in level 50 after you enter the cube described at the beginning of this message.

Your spells can be used inside and outside of battles with the letter C. You then select your level of spells. Level 1 spells are unlocked at level 1, Level 2 spells at level 3, level 3 spells at level 7, and level 4 spells at level 9. This makes my current theory that every level spell after level 1 and 2 is unlocked at 2X the number level of spell+1. Level 2 spells are its level +1, and level 1 is obviously itself. Although I didn't test this past level 4 because it gets hard to level up, it might continue to use this formula for the rest of the spell levels. I am also not completely sure about the maximum spell level, but I have made it up to 6 before on my old computer. Also, if you are unfamiliar with the spell level, either press =, ask google, or ask the comment section of this game. You will be sure to get an answer either way. This was all tested on Game version telengard.zip, and Game executable telengard/TELEN.exe.

This was one of my favorite games once upon a time, on a C64. If you hit C to cast, pick a level with a number, then hit = to list the spells, which have a 1 through 6 to cast them.
The boxes with buttons are the fastest way to get gold, and thus exp. They are combination safes. You will take damage when you hit the wrong color. Move to the side and come back - the combination will not reset when you try again. The same color can be used multiple times in a combination.
Stay close to the entrance early on. At least until level 4, so you can go heal and convert gold to exp quickly. A ring of regeneration is great for becoming braver.
You know how vulnerable you feel at level 1 on the level 1 dungeon? You will feel like that at level 6 with the level 6 dungeon. Stay at least 2 levels higher than your level to feel safe.
The monsters correspond hard to first edition D&D. Wraiths will steal levels, which will really hurt your feelings. At level 6 you get lightning bolts, which can hit like they sound.
The light spell will put asterisks in the spaces around you to say something is there... stairs, pits, fountains, boxes, thrones, etc.
The grey cubes can teleport you to lower levels.
The function keys use items. F1 is scroll of rescue. F2 is healing potion. I think scroll of rescue will leave your money behind, though, but it takes you to the original entrance.

Vaporeon 2023-07-07

The potions and scrolls of rescue are activated with the f1, (scroll of rescue) f2, (healing potion) f3, (strength potion) and f4 stores your character for next time. If you use the sv trick, (sv, then whatever you want your name to be, no spacebars.) It acts as a save point so if you die you can go back to wherever you previously pressed f4, even outside of taverns.

the healing potion, the potion of srength and the scroll of rescue do not work
