Description of Universe

M. Evan Brooks' review says it all about Universe 1:

A detailed simulation of space exploration and trading. Multi-faceted and very deep, its playability suffered from documentation which was hard to interpret as well as an unforgiving game system. Build your own ship to specifications, but a wrong move can waste hours of previous play. Still it was one of the early classics.

Unfortunately for armchair commanders, Universe 2 and 3 became more similar to RPGs with strategy playing only a minor role, but still great games nonetheless.

unplayable waste of freaking time. the controls and manual are pure crap.

back in the 80's i was able to pay this somehow on the atari.

how? why was it possible then?

The DOS version of Universe seems to be missing a file.
There are two copies of Flight, one with the extension ".ex_".

Thanks for the great web site!

Does someone have the Dos manual. Cannot play without it. Atari manual which I have does not seem to match.

Yeah we messed up with the two games, I removed the wrong screenshots

archmage 2011-03-18 0 point DOS version

These screenshots come from at least 2 different games. The first is Omnitrend's "Universe", an extremely detailed space strategy game for the 8-bit Atari home computers. A translation of that game for the PC is included in the downloadable archive on this page. You can get an idea from the sparsely-colored and mostly text-oriented screenshots.

The second game is less strategic and more of an adventure, as shown in the the screenshots with lots of colors. There was also a third game, similar to the second, so I cannot be sure if the screenshots are from a total of 2 or 3 games.

The only certain thing is that the downloadable archive on the page contains the first game, a clone of the old Atari 8-bit version.
