Description of High Command: Europe 1939-'45

As the title suggests, High Command puts you in command of the Allies or Axis during the most crucial points of World War 2. In contrast to Harpoon's micro scale, this game is decidedly a strategic-level wargame a la Gary Grigsby's games: control the Allies or Axis air, land, and sea forces in Europe.

Well-researched realism and scenarios are bogged down beneath spotty AI, cumbersome interface, and questionable supply logistics. It's fun if you enjoy realistic wargames, though.

Firstly, I do not understand how people complain about cheating AI. You can set a combat advantage or disadvantage in the game options. My opinion is the AI is so poor, its non-existant. The game is only playable against another human, but lacks play by email or networking computers options - a major flaw even in 1992! In my opinion it has major design flaws in production costs - production should require a higher ratio of minerals to oil than one to one ;
combat - any unit at 10% organisation in battle is killed no matter its size ; stacking (there is a limit) - is 18 units, but a units can be any size from 0.1 to 9.49 in value, so why isn't the stacking valued based on collective unit sizes?

One and only one thing that ruined this truly ahead of it's time gem was stacking, example: you could put all of french and BEF land and airforces into one hex, Paris for example. It made this truly revolutionary game unplayable. My biggest disappointment ever. Such a waste. Me and my buddies tried to work around it, but it was impossible. I don't understand how people enjoy this game. How nobody on the team noticed this game destroying glaring error.

I loved playing this game when I was young. Finally found a way to play it on modern PC's...and I am playing (and loving) it again. Has anyone ever found the scenario editor that can be used with the "User" option under Scenarios?

I've played this game for many years now. It's one of my favorite. Yes, it has an AI that "cheats" but it only lends to add to the challenge. Only real problem I have with it is all of the intense mouse use that tires my hand out.

One of my all-time fav games.

This is a detailed strategical WWII sim very much ahead of its time. Its got some bugs but never mind this because there is still endless possibilities in this game. Think Strategic command, resources, politics, reserarch, naval, land and air units, historic events. Also stacking and combining of units is possible. Develop the atomic bomb etc... Even PBEM is possible. Very enjoyable game indeed!
