I can honestly say, now, having tried the DOS version of this game, that the definititive version of this game is the Commodore 64 version. The DOS version doesn’t even come close. There’s so much in the C64 version that is completely lacking in the DOS version. Don’t bother with the DOS version of this game. Find the C64 version instead. This is a great game. It just completely fails with the DOS version.

This game was one of the very first games I ever bought for my C64. I had it on tape cassette. This is a game that you really need the manual and the individual monster cards that came in the box with the game, so you can understand what keys to hit to make your monster do his or her monster things. Also, the manual kind of lies. It claims that only the floppy disk version of the game allows you to create your own monster, and that the tape cassette version only allows you to select one of the monsters that comes with the game. This is wrong. This option exists in the tape cassette version and it functions fine. I made so many cool monsters with this game that I ended up with a little notebook, that I kept in the game box, that had all the monster stats, and instructions for how to build them. My favorite monster was a giant glob called "Pollution" that corroded everything that it touched, and could turn itself into a cloud of smog to wreak havoc with whatever city it attacked.

Ah. My first gaming experience and what has brought me here to start a retro gaming hobby. Such great memories. Been playing for a few hours now. Every bit as fun as the first time.

I remember finding the controls a bit awkward. But a great game even if the game has no way of actually "winning".

There's also a DOS version on archive.org, in the EXO DOS Strategy collection. I found it by searching for "chomp" at www.oldgamesfinder.com (very useful tool this!)
