In response to the previous comment, allow me to expand and correct based on an absurd number of hours spent playing this game in my youth and ferreting out all its secrets.

If you have a unit on the same space as a neutral unit (like Ents and Huorns) you can tell those units to move and thus use them in the war. Also, you have unlimited time to move units like Eomer and Farimir around before the hobbits reach Rivendell. So if you situation things wisely you can easily destroy Saruman and then get massed forces ready at Minas Tirith including the Ents and Huorns. Sauron's assault is then very easily defeated, and using the ents and Huorns you can then very easily invade Mordor and destroy Sauron and Barack-dûr.

There are two ways you can win this game:

-Destroy the Ring, by leading its bearer to Mount Doom, west of Barad-Dur
- Reenact the First War of the Ring and attack Barad-Dur itself. Slay Sauron in battle.

I would not recommend the second method, as I have only successfully managed it once, and this was by abandoning all of the good force's stronghold and attacking it with every single soldier in-game. Sauron himself can wipe out all but the largest formations, and with the 9500 orcs and 500 trolls guarding Barad Dur taking it is a grueling task. But if you do achieve victory and slay Sauron, you win the game upon the battle's conclusion.

The easier method is to simply destroy the Ring. This is significantly easier.... Unlike in the books if you are smart the Fellowship can avoid most of the orcs, climb over the mountains into Mordor, and then from there to Mount Doom. Whether or not the armies of Rohan, Gondor, or the dwarves and elves of Erebor actually beat back the assaults on their countries does not matter..... You don't lose by the evil forces capturing important points.

These are your best chances at winning the game. A great tip for a large battle between armies is to retreat all of your leaders (or at least the ones you care about) out of the battle. If they were to get slain it will cause discord for several days. Also, never send the Hobbits out on their own, they will get caught by a band of orcs and killed. If Frodo is killed and/or the Hobbits lose the battle the forces of evil will seize the ring and bring it to Sauron. Thus it is important in the trek from Hobbiton to Rivendell to avoid the Nazgul at all costs.

This game is pretty good, except for a few issues.
