Hi-Res Adventure #2: The Wizard and the Princess

Description of Hi-Res Adventure #2: The Wizard and the Princess
Matthew Murray said it all in his review of this terrible PC version of Sierra's (then On-Line Systems) Wizard And The Princess. I'm quoting it verbatim here as a proof that I'm not alone in the minority opinion that Roberta Williams was, and is, NOT the best adventure game designer ;)
"[This] was the second game released by Roberta Williams in the same year as Mystery House, (1980). Unlike Mystery House, Wizard And The Princess introduced color to the game. Very basic color, but color, none the less, which made the game all the more interesting. It was released again in 1982, for IBM (as Adventures in Serenia - Underdogs).
The plot? An evil wizard, Harlin the Malevolent captured the fair Princess Priscilla and put up magical barriers to prevent the Wanderer from being able to save her. However, the Wanderer, being very resourceful, managed to overcome the evil Wizard and save the Princess, but the Wizard was vengeful, and plotted to change history so the Wanderer didn't save the Princess. He challenges you to try and save her, with the new barriers intact. Using your wit, skill and with a little luck, you beat the wizard again and saved the beautiful Princess.
One of Sierra's earliest graphics games, Wizard and the Princess was a ridiculous little game with a threadbare plot that suggested what their games would eventually become (the game even took place in the land of Serenia, which was the name of the major country in King's Quest V). It had some cute graphics for the time, but mainly relied on very simple situations and cliches for their puzzles. If you can find it, play it for the novelty value, but it should not be considered playable for any other reason in this day and age."
There you go. Now play it to see for yourself how much better Infocom's games were in 1985 :)

i cannot compete with this level of quality in gam 2024-09-16 0 point
it seems there was an unknown level of quality in games in the prehistoric era of gaming. i cannot even compete with this level of quality the games used to have in the haydays of gaming. as a dev on itch.io i must really get to understand how this has been done so far into the production of this game. where i am not allowed to fail upon the audience of itch.io i must find the holy grail of retro gaming. this is it

I have seen many, many different qualities of game art.
This is seriously on par with what my crippled hand can draw right now, and these people were paid to do this?! I was born too late

true story; becaus i downloaded this paint drawing program for my nephew. to learn him
draw animals like the one in the screenshot above. when i started it it turned out to be a game.
i was impressed the way they made this game look at first glance you mistaken it for
a educational childrens drawing paint app.
but it was not. and i feel very sorry for him

the way in this game the graphics have been "constructed",
was this with, what ?, a etch-a-sketch ?
has there ever been an investigation into companies
delivering this type of "malproduction" on behalf of the
graphical side of games in that time period ?

today i will adress
masterpiece C-2, the drawing of the leprechaun as shown on the screenshots.
this imaginary high quality drawing of a little
leprechaun, or a dwarf is a good example of
mystic clearimpressionistic non-altruistic divinationitism with a touch of abstract
colorgraphicarray delutism.
it is to be considered unique in the industry
at the given point of today. but,
in old times this was the only way devs
were able to present their game.
(in graphics), yes.
especially when your game company cannot
even hire an artist who can draw and lets
their programmers itself make the art and
drawings for their games. very smart move
indeed.

it made me cry ..
the art is so touching on the screen.
it is the vibe of old .
it has that beautiful touch of mouse drawn
handiwork.
i have secretly printed one of the screenshots
and they are in a painting crest above my bed.
i look at it every night and it makes me fall
asleep very comfortably.
i will never forget this game.

This freezes in the inventory or just random places. Sad because I really want to give it a proper play through :(

Here are the controls. I got them off of the sierrahelp website.
F1 toggles graphics on and off.
F2 toggles colors of graphics.
F3 saves game.
F4 restores game.
F5 calls inventory.
F6 types look room.
"N", "E", "S" and "W" navigates one screen up, right, down and left, respectively (works for Apple][ version, too).

This game wasn't in big... the game in big was just random graphics made for the movie, and not an actual game.

I saw this game on the film 'Big' with Tom Hanks and I really wanted to play it. The reason for this is because you can type whatever you want and it happens!!!

It seems when I use commands like 'inventory' or do something that makes the text fill four lines, I get stuck and I can't enter commands anymore. I've only been able to start moving again a few times and that was just by mashing keys. Does anyone know how I can get around this? I'd really like to be able to play through this game.
