Truly epic play. This and No Greater Glory: The American Civil War are both good games. The game captures fighting really well and isn't too complicated to learn.
Tips for winning: In the first turn, attack and take Boston. If you are lucky in the amount of regulars you recruit and the British amount of forces that they are sending, you might be able to successfully take Canada as well. If not, just make do with Boston. Your best generals are Benedict Arnold and Nathaniel Greene. (Your next best options are Washington, Morgan, and Wayne.) Any attack you make should be led by Arnold or Greene in order to ensure the best chance of success. Never attack British forces unless you have a majority of at least 2,000 soldiers.
Assign Benjamin Franklin to France and John Adams to Others. Holland, Spain, and Britain aren't as important, feel free to assign whoever for these guys. If you are lucky, in a few turns France will agree to an alliance and the Prussian King will stop Hessian supply to Germany. (This is important, as Hessians make up about half the British armies being sent to America.)
In turn 2, the British will attack in one of these three areas: Charleston, Yorktown, or a really unlikely attempt to retake Boston. You WILL NOT have enough forces to withstand them at this point. Move any regulars you might have in the area inland, leave a decent general with the city's militia to inflict as many casualties as possible. Move your regulars from New England to Mid Atlantic and from Mid Atlantic to Chesapeake. Yes, you will lose, but you will need those regulars later on. (If your militia is lucky and the city you are defending has a fortress, you can sometimes inflict 5-6,000 casualties with 1-2,000 militia.)
In turn 3, you should have enough forces to counterattack and retake whatever point you lost in the previous turn. Again, your best bet of victory is Benedict Arnold or Nathaniel Greene. If you win here, it should have major consequences for the British. Holland and Spain will get to at least co-belligerency, and British support for the war will be eroding.
From here on, British attacks will be weak, if at all. Parry them if they land, take Canada or perhaps Quebec if you already have the former if you have the manpower. French forces might arrive to help you.
You will most likely win. The best score I've gotten was GOOD, so take my advice for what it is. Have fun dudes.
