Description of 20th Century Frog

In 1988, Tomas Kettenring publishes 20th Century Frog on DOS. This action game is now abandonware and is set in an ecology / nature theme.

20th Century Frog is a cute little game in which you control a frog's jumps, launching him around the screen to eat prey, bypass obstacles and avoid hazards. Although the gameplay is very simple, the control scheme is incredibly unique, and makes the game definitely worth checking out.

How to play 20th Century Frog

The way you move the frog is by controlling his leaps is with pressing various buttons on the keyboard. This game is unique in that it uses almost the entire keyboard, and jumps are affected by how far the keypress is from the bottom centre of the keyboard.

If you press a key in the centre of the keyboard the frog will jump straight up, press one to the right of the centre and he will jump to the right. The further away from the centre of the keyboard you press, the further in that direction he will jump. The higher up from the spacebar you press, the higher he will jump. It's a clever, intuitive control solution that makes the act of bouncing your little frog around very fun. 20th Century Frog runs perfectly in DOSBox, and even though it's in German, reading isn't required in this one.

This game's control system is super unique, you basically imagine the alphabetical keys on your keyboard are directions and if you want to jump in that direction, you basically press any key on that side of the keyboard. So to jump left, you can press Q or T for a high jump, but because T is closer to the center of the keyboard, you jump high, but less to the left than Q. It's pretty terrible, but I've never seen anything like it!

Anybody noticed that the title screen music resembles the 20th Century Fox fanfare?

I think the beginning of the description here was cut.
