The current .zip lacks a filed called "314_mace.u96" which I found here https://mdk.cab/game/mace.
To play the game on MAME I put together all the files extracted from the .zip (plus the one that I downloaded from the link above) inside the MAME/roms/mace folder, no subfolders nor split folders. It's a total of 6 files. The folder "mace" is case insensitive, but it's important that it has that exact name, otherwise MAME won't recognise it. After I did that the game worked right away, no further action required (except checking the input settings).
I sent an email to MyAbandonware so that they can not only add the missing file, but also modify the arrangement of the files inside the .zip, as the current one doesn't work on MAME.
