Colossal Cave Adventure (also known as ADVENT, Colossal Cave, or Adventure) is a text adventure game, developed between 1975 and 1977 by Will Crowther for the PDP-10 mainframe. The game was expanded upon in 1977 with help from Don Woods, and other programmers created variations on the game and ports to other systems in the following years.

PAPERBRAIN, released in 1985, and you say this is the first commercially released for the PC? Have you forgotten about Zork? And that's only the first I know of, but it's from 1982.

This was the first text based adventure game commercially released for the PC, and the namesake of the adventure game genre. Although very primitive compared to the adventure games of today, it's two word noun-verb parser was ahead of its time. It's name was changed to Colossal Cave after a trademark dispute with Atari who had previously released an action game with the same name. Worth the download if you are a fan of the history of electronic gaming, as I am.
