How to play Secret Weapons Over Normandy Windows
The game has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 10, it works fine. You may experience some small troubles when you play the game on modern systems, check our Guide and Notes for details
Install & play guide (for English (UK) version):
- Mount the disc image of CD1. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools Lite
- Install the game. It is recommended to install the game not in default path, but in some other, non-system folder, like
C:/Games/Secret Weapons Over Normandy
. When the installation process will ask for next discs - mount the next CDs. We recommend to mount the next CDs in same virtual drive as CD1, so first un-mount disc image of CD1 and then mount the disc images of next CDs - After you installed the game - open CD4 (Play Disc), go to
UK/Movies
and copyGallery
folder toSecret Weapons Over Normandy/UK/Movies
directory (the directory with installed game), then go toPC/Music
on CD4 and copy all audio files toSecret Weapons Over Normandy/PC/Music
directory. That way you will have all audio and video files in the game folder - Then use NoCD (for European (UK) release), simply copy files from the archive and put it into game directory, agree to replace the original files
- Open the directory with the game and find SWON.exe. Right click on SWON.exe -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows XP" and "Run as administrator". Then open
Secret Weapons Over Normandy/GameData
and select compatibility mode with Windows XP for Tesla.exe and Tesla_pt.exe - Launch the game and play. If the game doesn't work in compatibility mode with Windows XP - try to launch it in compatibility mode with other version of Windows (Win98, Windows ME, Win2000, etc.)
That guide is for English (UK) version, if you install the other language version, the step with CD4 will be slightly different - video files (Gallery
folder) might be in another folder, for example if you install German version, Gallery
folder is inside German/Movies
directory on CD4
Notes:
- If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
- It is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and NET Framework for the correct work of the game. Also it is recommended to install K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game videos
- The game works on DirectX 9, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
- The game doesn't have any DRM protection, only the simple disc check, use NoCD to remove it, don't forget to copy video and audio files from the fourth CD before that, as it's mentioned in the guide above. Please note that NoCDs for different language versions are not 100% compatible (videos won't work, like if you use NoCD for English version on German version, the in-game videos won't be playing), so use NoCD patcher by FBSA to manually remove the disc check. Unfortunately, that NoCD patcher doesn't work on 64-bit systems, so as alternative use the mini-image, simply mount it in virtual drive to bypass disc check, it works with all versions
- By default, the game works only in 4:3 screen ratio, and supports only the limited number of screen resolutions. You can try to edit the executable file with HeX-editor to enable higher screen resolutions, check this thread for details
- If you have any graphical issues, try to run the game with dgVoodoo 2. Also, with dgVoodoo you can run the game in high resolution with Antialiasing or Texture filtering (but if you enable wide screen resolution through dgVoodoo 2, the image will be stretched)
- If you have problem with broken sound effects or disappearing sound - first try to change the sound settings. If it didn't work - set sound quality to 24 bit, 48000 Hz or 24 bit, 44100 Hz. Read this guide how to do that
- The game has controller support, it should work fine with gamepads and joysticks. Once you connected the controller, select it in Options in Launcher. If the game doesn't recognize your controller - try using one of the additional tools from PCGamingWiki guide for controllers
