How to play Space Marines: Der stählerne Kaiser
Two methods to run the game:
- You need to install the game like this (it is an example, you can change the installation paths):
mount cc:\games -freesize 200
mount dd:\ -t cdrom
d:
install.exe
The main thing is that DOSBox should "see" enough space on the C:\ virtual drive, that's what "-freesize" command for. To play the game, it is recommended to use DOSBox SVN Daum. In DOSBox.conf file write the next settings, otherwise you will have issues with mouse cursor and graphics glitches:
output=ddraw
machine=vesa_nolfb
core=dynamic
cputype=pentium_slow
cycles=fixed 15000
(If the game crashes with core=dynamic setting, enter the default core=auto)
The game will frequently require you to change CDs, so better to mount both CDs with imgmount command before running the game. The example of command: imgmount dc:\SM\SMCD1.iso c:\SM\SMCD2.iso -t iso (you can change the paths to CD images)
If you experience problems with the mouse cursor, you can download the gmouse.com driver and run it before launching the game (place gmouse.exe in the game folder and run it in DOSBox before launching the game's executable)
- Another method to run the game is to download re-release CD (available on this page in Windows category), and run MS-DOS variant in DOSBox (that method originally was written on German, check this page for original instruction):
Without using the Windows 95 installer, you must manually copy the
SMARINESfolder to theC:\virtual drive. The installer will create a configuration file in the pathSMARINES\SMARINES.CFG, Content: "CONFIG.D", HeX code: 43 4F 4E 46 49 47 01 44. Run SETSOUND.exe to change audio settings. To prevent the graphics errors, add the following setting to your DOSBox.conf file:
####machine=svga_s3
machine=vesa_nolfb
You must mount the ISO image before every launch, because the game reads the video files from CD. Add the following line to the bottom of your DOSBox.conf file (inside the [] enter the path to file): IMGMOUNT D "[PATH\FILE].iso" -t iso

Windows Version
- Year: 1999
- Publisher: Software 2000
- Developer: Software 2000
Notes:
- The game was re-relased in 1999 in 2-in-1 pack with Total Control game. To fit everything on one CD, two high-quality intro videos (140 MB, 195 MB) were compressed. There's two executable on the disc: MARINES.exe - v21.01 from January 24, 1997, SMARINES.exe - v20.85 from February 28, 1996 (original release had v18.23 from November 5, 1995)
- Re-release is compatible with Windows 95 & 98 systems, but looks like it has some DRM protection that doesn't let to run the game in Virtual Machine, according to comments on this page. So better to play MS-DOS variant
- The game released only in Germany, and even though the Full Motion Videos featured American actors, there was no releases on English. Both the original release and re-release include only German version of the game. One of fans said is currently working on English translation, check comments on this page for details
