Description of The Colony

A revolutionary RPG that is largely forgotten, The Colony pioneers many concepts that are now familiar to most RPGers: fully rotational 3D gameworld, real-time action, digitized sound effects, and mouse-controlled movement. Your task in this sci-fi RPG is to rescue six children from a destroyed colony, then make it back to your ship and destroy the planet overrun by aliens. Despite shaky 3D effects and static 2D bitmapped view for most interaction scenes (opening drawers, etc.), The Colony is still a fun and highly innovative game for its time.

ADMIN: Look into this and see if it happens for you.
Since the DOS version has the bug I mentioned, I thought I'd try the Mac. When downloaded it (making sure I clicked the top button, then selecting the Mac at the bottom), I still got the DOS archive. I searched platform first, then the game name, and this time I got it.

The DOS version (don't know about the Mac) has a crippling bug that was introduced by a ham-fisted hack. Originally the intro was very long-winded with no way to speed up or bypass it, and the hack lets you jump into the game. Unfortunately this had the side effect of rendering the mouse pointer invisible at times, like when you try to access the console in screenshot #4. Hopefully I can get the Mac version to run in Mednafen...

I grew up with this game! I played for hours on some old shitty desktop my dad had, playing for hours and then getting really pissed when the machine would freeze on me. I downloaded this once before but I needed a different mouse drive so I'm hoping that isn't the case here.
Anyway, this is definitely some nostalgia, and if it works I'm getting high as shit and blasting low-fi aliens for hours!

this game serves as a mile stone to then growing advancements in computer technology back in the 1980's
many games before colony tried the 1st-person and only a few succeed dull to the Polygon's glitching or lagging because of lack of high memory cache needed to withstand the frame rate
