Below The Root - Play Online
DOS - 1984
For small DOS games like Below The Root, you can play online immediately with your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer...). This feature is still experimental, the game may not work properly. Warning: game save should work, but you should try it early! Also, be careful to select the right game executable in the list below.
Emulator configuration
You have to choose the right game executable, then press PLAY.
To exit fullscreen mode, press escape. Playing experience can be poor due to your browser or your computer. Download Below The Root and launch it with DOSBox to have the best playing experience!
If the game is too fast or too slow, try hitting CTRL-F11 (slower) and CTRL-F12 (faster).

Does anyone know a way to make the game work in the browser with a joystick? It's pretty unplayable using only the keyboard.

For those struggling to make the in-browser game work, here are some tips.
1) It worked for me in Chrome, but not Iexplorer or Edge.
2) After selecting to play in browser, from the Game Executable pull-down menu under Emulator configuration, select LOADER.COM

A fantastic game I remember playing with my family during childhood. The controls haven't aged well: the one joystick button was reserved for menu, which made jumping difficult (in a game where you are often precariously navigating branches and gaps high above the ground).
If you give it a try, be sure to pick up all of the equipment in your starting house, especially the Shuba! Shubas let you glide when you jump of ledges and are quite necessary to get around without killing yourself all the time. It will eventually get torn in a stupid way so try to buy a backup. Talk to people and they'll either let you take things, or tell you to get lost. But don't sleep in strange beds (even if offered to you) or you'll probably get kidnapped: I forget how to unlock the door in the kidnapper's house, but a trencher beak won't do it.
Anyway I definitely suggest giving it a try, it's quite an exploration game and unlike anything I've played since.
