Description of Glace

Glace is a polished, long, and fun freeware platformer that harks back to the golden days of Super Nintendo. The story: in a strange galaxy inhabited by aliens, two scientists named Dr. Frog and Dr. Slagg are trying to create a creature that will help them control the universe. Experiment number 4,286 results in yet another failure: a small, cute blob-like creature. Realizing his life is in danger from the upset scientists who order him killed, our blob hero escapes. Your goal is to help him explore 12 vast levels spanning 4 distinct platform "environments" each of which features unique scenery and enemies.

What makes the game a lot of fun is the ability to bounce around. You can gain momentum by jumping and bounce off walls. On the offensive side, you can collect magical beads and throw them at enemies, boomerang-style. Throwing the bead ahead, and then quickly moving to change its return path is a crucial tactic you need to master, and is a lot of fun to watch. Similar to the Oddworld games or Out of This World, the storyline in Glace is seamlessly tied to gameplay and unfolds with many well-scripted cutscenes and dialogs. It is no small wonder that the designer manages to fit the entire game inside 5MB of space, given the amount of cutscenes. The cartoony graphics fit the game perfectly, and even the music tracks are catchy and original.

Last but not least, Glace gives you plenty of reasons to replay it for the second or third time. Like many console titles, after you beat it for the first time, you are given the chance to buy new characters with the gems you have collected. The enemies also get harder and more numerous to match your new abilities. With great graphics, fun bouncing-around action, and even cool cutscenes and storyline (rare for a platform title), Glace is one of the most memorable freeware platformers and belongs in everyone's collection.

How to play Glace Windows

Notes:

  • All installer of the game showed 3~4 generic warnings about suspicious file, here's the scan report for installer v1.2. Executable of updated game v1.2 showed some generic warnings, here's the scan report. All files are safe to use, the warnings are generic, about unsafe or possibly malicious files, check this thread for more details about scan reports
  • Originally the game was compatible only with 16-bit and 32-bit systems and didn't work on 64-bit Windows. But the author of the game made an updated installer for the game v1.2 which is compatible with Windows 7 64-bit and newer 64-bit systems. That variant works with no problem on modern systems, it was tested on Windows 10 and 11
  • The game has fixed 640x480 screen resolution and if you play on wide display, the image will be stretched. To play with the correct 640x480 screen resolution, use Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) to fix the aspect ratio stretching on modern widescreen displays, here's the video guide how to use CRU. Add in 640x480 and it looks like the original, if the game still looks stretched, check the external display settings - if the setting is set to "wide" instead of "auto", switch it to "auto", it should work. Also, check PCGamingWiki for other tools that allow to select the custom screen resolutions
  • If you want to play the game with gamepad, use AntiMicroX utility to set the keyboard controls to gamepad
  • Tommy Visic, the original Glace developer, and Zachary Chavez, the original music composer, are currently working on Spirit of Glace, the complete remake of original Glace. You can follow the progress of development on Itch.io page
