In response to Gordern's question, several visual novels like this were released on DVD video during the early 2000s. The DVD player would accept instructions from its remote to cycle through the game's branching choices. Hirameki International Group Inc., for example, had once released Day of Love, Hourglass of Summer, and Phantom of Inferno on DVD-9 discs that were compatible with any device featuring DVD playback, such as a DVD player, PlayStation 2, Xbox, or PC.
Likewise, in 2002, Infinite Ventures Inc. had released a DVD video version of Dracula Unleashed, originally by Viacom for DOS and SEGA CD. Dungeons and Dragons Scourge of Worlds by Rhinomation is another example of the latter, i.e., more of an interactive movie than a visual novel.
All of these titles play generally well. The only issue I ever remember having with the visual novels was that the dialogue boxes would only remain onscreen for a fixed amount of time, rather than using a button to manually advance through them. All the choices, however, would remain on screen until the player had made his decision by using the directional and selection buttons on his DVD player's remote.
