How to play The Hell in Vietnam Windows
The game has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 10, it works fine. You may experience some small troubles when you play the game on modern systems, check our Notes for details
Notes:
- The installation path should have ONLY the English letters!
- If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
- It is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and NET Framework for the correct work of the game. Also it is recommended to install K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game videos
- The game works on DirectX 8, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
- If the game crashes after the third mission - run the game in compatibility mode with Windows 98/Me and as administrator. That way the game works more stable
- All versions of the game has only the simple disc check, no DRM-protection. You can use NoCD to play without the disc. All NoCDs should be compatible with all language versions, so if one of NoCDs doesn't work, try the other one. There's 4 NoCDs in total: two for v1.0 and two for v1.1
- By default the game allows to select 4:3 screen resolutions, but you can easily run it in wide screen resolutions up to 4k. To do that download Chrome Engine 2 - FOV Fix (that fix also works as NoCD), extract the files to game folder, then go to
The Hell in Vietnam/Data
folder, open VideoSettings.scr in Notepad and inResolution
line enter the new screen resolution. That way you can run the game in high screen resolution up to 4k. Check WSGF page for more details - The game may crash at the start, especially if you run it in 4k screen resolution. To fix it remove logo.mpeg and logo_chrome.mpeg files from the game folder
- There's some "hidden" graphics settings that cannot be selected in-game, but can enabled by editing of VideoSettings.scr file in
The Hell in Vietnam/Data
folder. Open that file in Notepad and change the settings, we also added the edited VideoSettings.scr file with maximum graphics settings and 1920x1080 screen resolution - Field of View (FOV) in the game is 65° by default. If you want to change the FOV, you need to edit the game files, follow this instruction
- German retail release was censored due to German laws, you can find uncut patch here, here's also More Blood mod for that version. Or you can install German translation patch on uncensored English version
- Czech translation patch showed a lot of warnings on VirusTotal scan, here's the scan report. Use it at your own risk, we recommend to use it on Virtual Machine, for 100% safety
- Don't forget to check PCGamingWiki if you have troubles!
