How to play Hidden Runaway Windows

The game has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 10 and Windows 11, it works fine. You may experience some small troubles when you play the game on modern systems, check our Notes for details.

The game is multilingual, with English, French, German, Italian and Spanish languages. You can select the language on starting screen or switch it in game settings.

Notes:

  • If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup in Compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP) and as Administrator
  • If the game doesn't work - run it in Compatibility mode with old Windows (like Windows XP) and as Administrator. Also, it is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and NET Framework for the correct work of the game, and K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game videos
  • The game is using OpenAL for the audio, make sure to install it for the correct work of the game. The installer is available inside the game folder, simply run oalinst.exe. If you get the error about missed/broken openal32.dll - delete any versions of OpenAL that you installed earlier and install OpenAL from oalinst.exe in game folder; if it didn't help - download openal32.dll from here and put it in game folder
  • You can play the game in Windowed mode by selecting it in settings. If the game still runs in Fullscreen mode even after you selected the Windowed mode - press Alt+Enter while you play the game
  • The digital release of the game (the one that is uploaded to our website) had a critical bug when the game crashes after the museum level or when loading the hut level. The reason is that the game has a broken resource node, RESOURCE.E03 file. To fix the bug use the fix by TFS Lab, simply run it and show the path to the folder with installed game. The fix showed few generic warnings but the file is safe to use, nothing to worry about, simply add the file to antivirus exceptions list
  • There was no such bug in retail CD release but we couldn't find it, if you have it, please contact us

Thanks a lot for uploading my request!

There's a misunderstanding I must clarify about the release of the game. There was digital release for Windows at all, contrary to what the description suggests. The game was only released on retail disc for Windows. The "digital release" the description refers to is simply the version of the game, ripped from the retail disc, that was shared on Archive.org and on Rutracker, and that is now available here on My Abandonware.

The confusion comes from the fact that a user from Rutracker claimed that the crash issue was present in the version that was shared online but absent in the disc version, and yet the files from the two versions were identical on a one-on-one comparison, which is why they didn't bother re-ripping it again. You can imagine yourself how puzzling a claim like this is, and I'm not sure yet what's the explanation behind this.

I managed to complete the game on Windows 11. I needed oalinst.exe to have the game run at all and the TFS Lab fix for the museum level. Unfortunately, even after installing all other additional libraries and codecs, I couldn't solve all other bugs: I still can't view the credits or the tutorial, I still can't set the window mode from within the game, and several cut scenes from Brian and Gina in the "present day" are still not reproduced. Not to mention sporadic cases when the game simply crashes for no apparent reason, but then works normally on the second attempt.

What's odd is that the game seems to use the same proprietary engine of other Pendulo games, and yet I never once had issues with Runaway 3, The Next Big Thing or Yesterday, which were all released earlier than Hidden Runaway.

Alternatively, there's the iOS release, which was delisted but can be downloaded from Archive.org. To my knowledge, there are no PC emulators yet for iOS 4.0 and above, but I suppose someone could make it run on an actual iOS.
