How to play Universe at War: Earth Assault Windows

The game with patches and NoDVD has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 10, works fine. The game supports widescreen. You may experience some small troubles when you play the game on modern systems, check our Guide and Notes for details

Install & play guide:

  • Mount the disc image. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools Lite
  • Install the game (if autorun doesn't work - simply launch the installation from Setup.exe inside the disc)
  • Also it is recommended to install DirectX 9 (if you're using Windows 10 - enable DirectPlay, read this or this guide how to do it)
  • Once you installed the game - install all three patches
  • After that install NoDVD (simply copy LaunchUAW.exe from the archive and put it into directory with installed game, agree to replace original file)
  • Then use Xliveless to disable GFWL in the game (simply copy files from the archive and put it into directory with installed game)
  • Open the directory with the game and find LaunchUAW.exe. Right click on LaunchUAW.exe - Properties - Compatibility - Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows Vista" and "Run as administrator"
  • Launch the game and play. If the game doesn't work in compatibility mode with Windows Vista - try to launch it in compatibility mode with Windows XP Service Pack 3

Notes:

  • If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
  • If the installer cannot recognize the serial key - just enter random letters, like AAAAA-AAAAA-AAAA-AAAAA, it should work
  • NoDVD is required for the launch because the game is using SafeDisc DRM protection, which doesn't work correctly on modern systems. That NoDVD "breaks" DRM protection and allows the game to work on modern systems
  • The game was working on Games for Windows LIVE service, so the game will be asking for GFWL on every launch. To skip that annoying process use Xliveless to disable GFWL: simply copy files from the archive and put it into directory with installed game. After that you can delete Games for Windows LIVE, since it is not required for the launch anymore
  • The game has localization on 12 languages: full English version with English audios & videos, and text translations on French, German, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Thai. By default, the game uses the same language that is installed on your system. If you want to change the in-game text (all videos in all versions are on English with subtitles), then go to the Universe at War Earth Assault/Data/Text directory and delete all language files, except for the language that you need. Check this thread for details
  • It is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for the correct work of the game
  • Also it is recommended to install RAD Video Tools and K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of the game
  • The game works on DirectX 9 and 10, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
  • The game uses DirectX 10 by default, if you have lags or glitches - disable DirectX 10 in Settings, the game will switch on DirectX 9. The game supposed to work more stable on DirectX 9
  • The game was using GFWL servers for the multiplayer, but since GFWL is closed for years, the only way to play the multiplayer now is to emulate LAN game, with utilities like Hamachi or Tunngle. If you want to find multiplayer game - join Universe at War - Earth Survivors Discord server
  • Official Mappack adds 3 new maps that you can play in multiplayer or with bots. To install it put the files from the archive in Universe at War Earth Assault/Data/CustomMaps directory (if there's no such folder - just create it)
  • For users of Windows 64-bit systems: if the game doesn't work after you launched it - open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del by default) and check for processes LaunchUAW.exe and rundll32.exe. Close LaunchUAW.exe but don't touch rundll32.exe (it's a Windows app for running old apps from 32-bit operational systems, most old games running through rundll32.exe). Now try to launch the game again, it must work. Don't forget to close rundll32.exe process in Task Manager after finishing playing
  • Don't forget to check PCGamingWiki page if you have troubles

How Do I apply the patches

Zboi 2024-05-27 0 point

I need help with the setup.exe file. My game folders don't have any!

Nuntz 2024-03-15 1 point

@Grubber

I ended up using Winrar to get the patches installed.

You just need to open the patch exe files with winrar and copy them to your games directory then overwrite the files there.

Grubber 2023-09-14 4 points

It says the patchers are "unable to determine the UAWEA.exe game version". Is anyone else having trouble with this?

admin 2023-08-13 1 point

@LOVELIKEBLOOD If the installer says that CD-key is wrong - just enter random letters, like AAAAA-AAAAA-AAAA-AAAAA, it should work. And after you installed the game - make sure to install NoDVD and Xliveless, otherwise the game will keep asking for CD-key

LoveLikeBlood 2023-07-26 1 point

Bros, both the cd-keys in the 'game extras' don't work, it says I "exceeded the usage" for both keys. I already bought two copies off eBay and NEITHER of them had cd-keys in the case. Talk about bad luck. Can anyone out there help a fella out?

We have updated the game, added patches plus instruction how to run the game on modern systems

This works on Windows 11:

1. Extract the .zip,
2. Install an .iso hosting software and mount the .iso image as a DVD
3. Run the game installer from disc (Disc - Install folder - Setup.exe),
4. During the installation, enter the key provided by Z90: PH2G6-D472M-FTPPJ-26F7Q-96YKB,
5. Once the game is installed, go back to the disc and copy the cracked .exe file to your installation directory, overwriting the original (Crack folder - LaunchUAW.exe, copy this file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Sega\Universe At War Earth Assault),
6. Now you'll be able to double click LaunchUAW.exe to run the game! You can shift + right click - Sent to Desktop (Create Shortcut) if you want a shortcut to the game.

Enjoy!

Seems like I got everything but it's telling me that I need the DVD to play. Has anyone managed to successfully run the game without the DVD?

Stormraider49 2022-08-24 0 point

Hi. I'm not the best with computers, let alone abandonware games. I'm trying to do Rakkman's fix but I don't really know how to swap the normal and cracked launchers out. I try to copy one to the other and back but it says the install and crack files need more space but I can't delete anything in any of the drive's files (all the files are listed under DVD drive G: so I dunno if I messed up or what) can someone please help me?

deathwing12 2022-06-14 2 points

where is the crack folder? only thing in my download was the ISO file

Atropos 2022-06-02 1 point

@Grundeldorf: I had the same xlive.dll error message when trying to launch the game. Downloading the legacy version of that file solved the issue.

Here's a link to a good, short YouTube tutorial on how and what to do:

Grundeldorf 2022-03-08 0 point

moved the cracked launcher into the games folder to replace the base one and when i launch it tells me it cant find xlive.dll and closes withour launching

valakdhur 2021-12-28 1 point

install with the CD key commented below as well as Rakkman's fix got it working for me.

Jeff 2021-11-15 2 points

Install worked fine. Copied the crack starter. Launcher opens, but trying to start the game throws an error saying "The ordinal 43 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\windows\SYSTEM32\xlive.dll."

asks to insert disk, i tried the fix that @rakkman suggested but had no effect on my end

Rakkman 2021-08-30 5 points

@BEN
Had the same problem, got it solved by Swapping the LaunchUAW.exe inside the install destination folder (C/programms(x86)/Sega/UAWEA in my case) with the LaunchUAW.exe inside the Crack folder

BEN 2021-08-28 0 point

It asks to insert DVD disc when I try to start it, can't play.

andreas aspenberg 2021-08-24 -2 points

it is a good game that is very resource heavy. i have it on disc, though it have some interface issues in newer systems that makes it difficult to get to run properly. i hope that it gets a re-release on steam and gog with its issues fixed.
