I just found out that TeknoParrot, an emulator originally made for more modern PC based arcade boards, has recently expanded to various older arcade boards by integrating other emulators. This includes Play, and so I highly recommend running the game through this new method instead of installing Play separately.

TeknoParrot can automatically check for and install updates for you, and it is far easier to setup Wangan Midnight The controls are properly labeled in TeknoParrot's controller setup and it will automatically configure all of the recommended video settings in Play for you. Just a side note, TeknoParrot incorrectly labels Coin as a separate key, but Service is the actual Coin key.

The legacy release is very old and outdated on initial installation, but once updates are found and installed it will have access to every feature and supported game/emulator. It is also recommended to make an account if you wish to play modern arcade games that support an online connection, although sadly they recently locked all online features through a subscription paywall despite the community being greatly against the proposal.

The best way to play this game and Wangan Midnight: R is by using the Play emulator, as it can boot up Namco System 246 games such as this one. You can download the emulator here: https://purei.org/downloads.php

Put the game into a dedicated ROM folder then set up the file directory for it under Settings in the Options drop down. All of the supported arcade games are displayed, so you will have to scroll down to find Wangan Midnight on the game list.

The controller mappings under Play's controller mapping are all PS2 bindings but Wangan Midnight requires specific keys:

Steering: Analog Left X
Gas: Analog Left Y
Brake: Analog Right X
Shift Up: Triangle
Shift Down: Square
View: Circle
Enter: Cross
Coin/Select: Select
Select Up: D-Pad Up
Select Down: D-Pad Down
Test: L3 + R3

If playing on a controller it's not recommended to bind these exact keys as listed on a PS2/Xbox controller because the game may feel uncomfortable to play. (Ex: Not recommended to actually use analog stick up for the gas pedal.) Use whatever key binds you find yourself preferring.

You will very likely need to access the test menu to fix the gas pedal not being able to be inputted all the way. Open up the menu with Test, use Select Up/Down to navigate the menu and Enter to confirm. Go to I/O Test and then GO TO I/F INITIALIZE to recalibrate the steering wheel and pedals. Press Coin/Select to set the default positions.

Alternatively.....you could just play the official PS2 port of this game. Which features the exact same arcade mode with the addition of extra/unlockable cars and a story mode based on the Wangan Midnight manga.
