Baryon
DOS - 1995
Description of Baryon
One of the best top-down shooters ever made, but also one of the most unknown due to lack of distribution, Baryon takes you on a cruise through alien-infested territory as you collect power-ups and shoot everything in sight.
Gameplay is fast-paced shooting action, presented with attractive graphics and endless variety of enemies. With an assortment of powerups similar to those found in Raiden, your screen can quickly fill up with enemy fire and explosions. Quick manuevering in avoiding fire will be essential to successfully reaching the big bad boss that usually reside at the end of the level. Baryon may not have the sharper graphics found in today's arcade games, but the action and the powerup bonuses makes it worthwhile and enjoyable.
With great gameplay and solid graphics (and even a good soundtrack) that rival the best of commercial shooters, Baryon is a must have for all action fans. Thumbs up!

I can run the shareware version with DOSbox DAUM SVN, but no luck with this, the full version. I can install it from the archive to a new directory, but it doesn't run. Something to do with the funky 256 x 200 screen resolution? But then why does the shareware version work?

Re: Freedom's comment
The original Touhou PC-98 games didn't have hitbox textures until Touhou 4. I played these games before, as well as games like Gradius, so I'll see how it goes.

Pretty well made, seems enjoyable if able to get used to it...
However I there are three major things I noticed:
1.Unable to reset speed. The games gives option to change the gameplay speed (slow-mo, turbo, etc), but there was no option to reset, so I had to reinstall to get the "default" speed back.
2.With the hoizontal gameplay screen format, it is rather difficult to dodge direct frontal fire (at default speed), some of them are just too fast. ZUN is wise to make Touhou gameplay screens vertical.
3.Unable to see the player ship's actual hitbox. Again, this may be because I've played Touhou before, but being unable to see the hitbox is a bit uncomfortable.
