Tetris
DOS - 1986
Description of Tetris
Here is the culprit for the huge decline in global productivity for at least a few months, if not years :) No description should be necessary here-- let's just say that if you really don't know what Tetrismeans or never saw falling blocks in your dreams, you ain't seen nothing yet It's probably also the most cloned and imitated game in the world.
Definitely NOT an underdog, but its designer Alexei Pajitnov definitely is, as he never became well-known. Check out his other games on this site!

This is more than just an addicting DOS puzzle game. This is a piece of gaming history. Vadim Gerasimov did a FANTASTIC job porting the E60 version to the IBM PC. If any of you have the time, I'd highly recommend watching The Gaming Historian's "The Story of Tetris" video. It is a great watch and a fascinating story.

If you aren't insane enough to emulate the E60 then this is the original version of Tetris, and it's still godlike. Definitely deserves more recognition. If you want to get the updated version, Gerasimov himself put it on his webpage along with his perspective of the backstory of the game. https://vadim.oversigma.com/Tetris.htm

Wish there was arrow control instead of numeric key. But wow this is the greatest.

No joke, I was born in 1989 but this game is the first PC game I have ever played and I think I was about 4-6 years old. One of the greatest games in the history of PC games.
