Warlords II Deluxe
DOS - 1995
Description of Warlords II Deluxe
Warlords II Deluxe is a great game. Its limited release as compared to Warlords I, Warlords II standard, and the modern Warlords III make it a real underdog.
Warlords II Deluxe (WL2D from here on) is not a sophisticated wargame, in fact it feels like a bit of a "hack" which has expanded beyond its wildest dreams, and perhaps its ace is the included scenario builder and designer. This allows your imagination to run wild with graphics, unit types and worlds to fight in, something many other games are less able to do, if at all. A "library manager" lets you ship scenario sets around easily (which in turn are made up of city sets, army sets and terrain sets). The sounds are OK, but nothing special; the background music is a good catchy battle tune, but possibly a bit repetitive. The occasional digitized speech from your military advisor is cool.
The computer opponent is not too clever. He'll send his hero out early to search ruins to gather relics and gold, but leaves himself open to ambush all too easily. However, while a single opponent is just about competent, fighting against up to 7 other sides makes the game rather trickier, especially if you beef their power up to "Warlord (enhanced)" and declare all out war on all of them before you start. The computer AI will attack poorly defended cities without mercy.
Diplomacy is included, and is a little erratic at times, but it's a handy option. I imagine this comes into its own when you're up against a human opponent or two (with possibly some computer players thrown into the pot). A side if doing badly will offer surrender - if you refuse you must eradicate them completely. I've had some success with diplomacy, but as in the end you're out to kill and maim everyone, any agreements are likely to be temporary.
A fun element is the building up of heroes. Normal units can get bonuses with time, like +1 STR medals, or +1 STR blessings, but heroes get experience and levels to raise what stats they have. They can collect relics (which only heroes can carry) which give combat and movement bonuses, or other nice effects like +4 gold per city per turn.
Ultimately, this game is great fun and addictive. Try the Tolkien Scenarios, try the Arthurian one, the Shogun one, etc etc etc. Two thumbs up!

I have downloaded the (full) ISO version of this game, DosBox states it contains NO DOS programs, so I can not load it. What is a ISO "light version"? Probably stripped to the bones. 47 MB compared to 559 MB? There has to be a lot of shit missing. So why bother? Find this game elsewhere.

Warlords II deluxe is one of the best computers ever made. The atmosphere, music and gameplay is so fun and so cool. I love the big warlord that shows up occasionally to comment on my progress. If you can't get the music to work, just search for it on Youtube and play that in the background.
If you play single player you should try "I am the best" mode and see how long you can survive the ruthless enemy attacks, and if possible, try playing hotseat with a friend plus AI opponents added in for some great fun. The next game Warlords III is just as awesome or even better and has 2 games: Reign of Heroes and Dark Lords Rising.

If you are having problems to get the sound working with Dosbox you might want to create a file called "SOUND.DAT" inside the games directory and place this line inside:
SB16.COM SB16.ADV 1
If you are using D-fend just setup the game using the wizzard and choose all the default settings for the soundcard setup. This should be all you need to do to enjoy the good old sound. Enjoy the game!

New to using dosbox -- it only uses about 1/8th of my screen -- any way to get it to full screen mode? The sound and game loaded fine, but I can't really see what i'm doing.
