Description of Kampfgruppe
"A tactical simulation of warfare on the Eastern Front, this game was CGW's Game of the Year in 1985. Multiple options, but marred by a lack of joystick input and amorphous stacking (virtually an entire army could be crammed into a small geographic location).
A classic that has been redone many times; the latest reincarnation will be Gary Grigsby's own STEEL PANTHERS III." [excerpt from M. Evan Brooks' Homepage]
It was also one of the first wargames to offer line-of-sight options. Highly Recommended!

Regiment or brigade level turn-based tactical combat game on the Eastern Front between 1941 and 1945. Kampfgruppe was the first wargame I played back in the 1980s and at the time I thoroughly enjoyed it. Graphics were OK for 1985 but would be considered unbelievably basic now. The game interface is simple enough that as a new computer user in the 80s I managed to pick it up without too much trouble, though I did have the manual to hand. Overall the gameplay is reasonable. The AI will give you a challenge while you are learning what you are doing. On defence it knows how to put units taking advantage of cover and with good fields of fire. When attacking the AI takes advantage of the fact that you can get virtually your entire force into one location and sends it forward to swarm your defences. A good game for what it is.
