Description of President Elect: 1988 Edition
President Elect puts you in control of any US presidential campaign between 1960 - 1988, in either historical or ahistorical mode.
The game is turn-based, and you must allocate "political action points" (PAP) for various actions. Harking perhaps to real politics, you allocate the percentages of time to spend on critizing your rival and dodging questions in a national debate-- without ever needing to state your platform. An arguably "realistic" sim in this way.

I created a female 3rd party candidate, gave her mainstream views on all issues except feminism and women’s right (she was radical on those) and ran her against 2 extreme candidates - I think Jesse Jackson and Pat Buchanan. Gave her highest marks for debating ability and charisma, etc.
She won in a landslide - took all 50 states and DC, so it is possible to win the game that way but you need to run against weak, extreme candidates.

I remember hacking the code for the C64 version (it was written in BASIC), to try to create a 3-way even race. No chance, there were a lot of built in dynamics that forced 2 party dominance.

I've enjoyed this game for many years, first played it on my Apple IIc but now have it for DOS under DOSBox and the Apple version under an Apple II emulator. Still a pretty good play. The only issue I have with the game is that if you play as a third party candidate you can never win, no matter how terrible you make the Democrat and Republican candidates. But I guess that's pretty much like real life.

Took me about 10 minutes to figure out exactly how this was cracked. So, the codes in the word document work, you just don't need them. When you get to copy protection, just press enter. I even downloaded the manual to cross reference and they're right, but this crack doesn't accept anything other than just a blank for some reason.

Strategic based this on a 1985 RBBS door that allowed up to 32 candidates, but only allowed for three parties: Republicans, Democrats, and Psychotics. The kid who wrote the door reportedly gave a copy to someone on his BBS who worked at Strategic to see if he could mod the code to be more fun to play, and this was the result.
