Linux (Wine) fix — update

Tested on Wine via Lutris, no Windows VM needed for basic gameplay:

"Insert CD1" error — Wine's virtual CD drive isn't set up by default. Fix: mount cd1.iso as a real loopback CD-ROM device (not a plain folder), then point Wine's D: drive to that mount. This makes Wine correctly detect it as a real disc.
Note: this same error also happens on real Windows 10/11, because Microsoft removed the old SafeDisc driver (secdrv.sys). On real Windows you need a No-CD patch or to restore that driver — the Wine fix above is a separate, cleaner workaround.

Known problems still open on Wine:
- Resolution stuck at 640x480 — no in-game way to change it under Wine.
- Cutscene videos: sound plays, picture stays black. Not a QuickTime version problem — tested QuickTime 7.7.6, QuickTime 7.7.9, and QuickTime Alternative 3.2.2, same result every time. The video-drawing part of the game's Macromedia Director engine (a component called "QuickTime Asset") does not render under Wine. No fix found yet.
- One cutscene has an audio glitch — a sound effect (door) plays twice.

If you need working cutscene video specifically, a Windows XP virtual machine is currently the only confirmed way to get it.

Update: got it running natively on Linux(Cachy OS) with Wine/Lutris, no Windows XP VM needed for the CD-check.

Turns out the "CD1 has to be inserted" error on Windows 10/11 isn't really about the disc — it's SafeDisc/SecuROM copy protection, and Microsoft removed the kernel driver it depends on (secdrv.sys) starting with Windows 10. So even with the ISO mounted correctly, the check itself can't run on modern Windows — that's the actual reason a Windows XP VM "fixes" it (XP still has the old driver).

On Linux, Wine doesn't use that Windows driver at all — it does its own simpler drive/filesystem check, so it was never blocked by the SafeDisc issue in the first place. It just needs an actual CD-ROM-type drive present with disc 1's files on it:

1. Loop-mount disc 1's ISO instead of just double-clicking it in a file manager:
udisksctl loop-setup -f cd1.iso
2. Symlink the resulting mount into your Wine prefix's drive letters (adjust the prefix path to yours):
ln -sfn "$(findmnt -n -o TARGET /dev/loop0)" ~/.wine/dosdevices/d:

If you're using Lutris: double-check the game's config actually has a Runner set to "Wine" and a Prefix path defined — if you added the game via "locally installed game," it can silently end up with neither, and falls back to a default prefix that may have no D: drive registered at all. That alone will always throw "CD1" regardless of what's actually mounted anywhere else.

Once that's in place, TGstart.exe launches straight past the CD-check — no VM, no No-CD patch needed. Still need QuickTime for the in-game movies (separate issue, see other comments in this thread).

And last thing I forgot:
game needs to be copied to C: folder, or running from mounted from D, but TGstart.exe should not be readonly, othewise load/save dialog not opening....

Last but not least, for audio problem in the windows xp, downlod VMAudioBackHost from github and run once to fix any auidio issues.

One thing I forgot, before running the game, install quicktime 7.7.6 (didn't tried quick time 7.7.9 which is latest, nor the one comming from the dvd version), without quicktime game is working, but can break, or user can't see the movies, or clicking esc go back to the menu.

To install quicktime with shared folder option:
1. Ctrl + D to open virtual machine settings
2. Select options
3. Folder sharing on the right, select always enabled and map the folder as network drive
4. Add the desire shared folder
5. Restart the VM
6. Now the shared folder appears as Z drive
7. Install quicktime from there (U will download from your windows host machine and copy quicktime in the shared folder)

Working solution (the game not working on windows 11 25H2, and u need vmware, virtualbox was slow for me, maybe because i have hyper-v enabled for WSL2, not sure if hyper-v was disabled, virtualbox will be good for the game, or just vmware 3d acceleration is better)

Steps:
1. Download the dvd version
2. With poweriso or similar tool convert to iso
3. Install the game
4. Download the patch and apply in the root of the installation folder
5. install vmware workstation pro latest version (please note that u need to download winPreVista as it's not part of vmware)
6. After installing windows xp sp3, mount the winPreVista.isto in the D drive of windows xp, and choose complete option to install everything.
7. After that with poweriso or similar, create iso from the installation folder of the game
8. Mount the game in D driver of windows xp.
9. Play the game

One thing I noticed, when installing windows xp, on installing winprevista, xp can go black screen, so going to virtual machine settings (ctrl + d), go to display and disabled 3d graphics option.

For a game that was essentially a bunch of Quicktime videos stitched together, it was surprisingly good
