I loved the C64 version.
Tips that I learned in modern times!
If you carry around too many DIFFERENT items, the Devourer will show up and destroy some of them, (it was required due to memory limitations). It always seemed like every time I was really well equipped, the Devourers kept showing up, now I know why!
The Champion in White orders you to step aside when you encounter him. I always fought him, unfortunately he is flagged as "GOOD" despite his rudeness. If you kill him, you will move more towards Evil.
The Phoenix is the same as the champion. It is good, don't kill it.
Both of these issues caused me to become "neutral" because I thought I was only killing Evil critters, because of that, you will not be able to join or stay in either the good or evil guild.
When you find the load stone and it attaches to you, you will move very slowly. You can temporarily get rid of it by giving it to a Beggar or a Hierophant. Ultimately to get rid of it completely, there is a flame thing to throw it in.

@Kyle.
The C64 version works perfectly fine in WinVICE (at least the version 3.1 r33405 I used)
One needs to enable "True Drive Emulation" and be patient during the initial loading process (use LOAD "*",8,1 to properly begin the loading sequence)
Be patient for about 60 seconds during the black screen.
After the intro screen, then a fastloader will be used to quickly load the rest of the game

"Alternate Reality" was a remarkable series for the mid 1980's, a pity it was never completed and ended with The Dungeon. There were many concepts in this game that wouldn't be fully realized for more than a decade, such as a hidden morality system with real consequences, multiple guilds with their own membership requirements and quest lines, and the ability to transfer characters back and forth between games seamlessly (though with only two games finished it was kind of pointless).
