Paratrooper
DOS - 1982
Description of Paratrooper
Before Windmill Software and CHAMProgramming, Orion Software was one of the first game developers that specialized in creating PC "clones" of well-known arcade games, usually from the extensive catalogs of Atari, Taito, or William.
Lack of originality or official license notwithstanding, their games are excellent conversions of famous classics that, surprisingly enough, often look and play better than official PC ports. Aside from great gameplay, Orion games are also notable for being coded with a built-in timer - which means they work at the right speed even on modern computers. Kudos to the designer Greg Kuperberg for having such foresight.. it's not so often you find a 1983 game that doesn't need to be slowed down :-)
If you can't get enough of Q*Bert, Pac-Man, or Paratrooper, check out these excellent classics that truly stand the test of time.

The game was good for an arcade like game of its time.
Not much in terms of gameplay, but it wasn't supposed to either.
What it has is fun, though obviously not the type of game you are going to spend hours on.
I did a video on it.

Great game to play as a kid. Shooting the guys' parashoots and watching them fall to the ground and splatter was wildly entertaining. The kind of game a parent would go "holy cow that's morbid and awful", but it all looks like cartoon violence to a kid, so the kid doesn't really think about it.

So maybe it wasn't on the Apple that I played this...

MyAbandonware has the same game listed under the name "Sabotage". under the Apple ][.. I did wonder why I thought the name was "Paratrooper" instead. Ha!
