The black ships are the idiot vessels. They'll always go straight toward you no matter which direction you go.
The red ships are the intelligent vessels. They won't always go where you think they will, but they can still be defeated by intelligence of your own.
The light blue ships do broadsides. When on the same horizontal, vertical, or diagonal as any of them, you need to stay at least three squares away. If you pull a "knight" on them, you might have a shot.
The ghostly ships are the Flying Dutchmen. Get ready to go utterly nuts.
