I forgot to mention: it's a bigger disappointment when you consider that this is the work of Mike Singleton, the man behind such gems as The Lords of Midnight series.

I had more fun playing his VIC-20 game Snake Pit, than Whirligig a.k.a. Space Cutter!

More of a showcase for the graphics than the gameplay. A pity really, they could have made a better shooter game out of the graphics engine, but the weighed it down with complicated nonsense about 'eigenspaces' and such.
