Ok, just to help total laymen with a lack of technical knowledge, here's what I did to get it to work:
1. make a virtual drive with DaemonTools (for me it was K:)
2. download and install dosbox, drag and drop the gamefolder on the desktop icon for Dosbox (this will mount the gamefolder apparently)
3. type "mount k: c:\gamefolder -t cdrom -ioctl" (where gamefolder is the path where you have the Captialism game on your harddrive) in Dosbox window
4. type "capmain", followed by enter
5. use alt-enter for fullscreen (which did screw up my windows aero settings, but I guess I'll get those back when I close the dosbox windows or re-start my pc)
Haven't tried savegames yet.

Ok, I got it started by not using capitals when typing "-t cdrom" (by holding down the shift button), but now I can't change the size of the dosbox window, it's very small. Can't go fullscreen or even change the size. Guess that information maybe can be found through dosbox forums.

I tried typing various command lines proposed here in dosbox but every time I tried typing "-T CDROM" I would get the error "illegal type CDROM" (is it capital sensitive?). I also only have 1 drive, C: on my windows 7 pc. But I tried the suggested d: or h: here as well anyway. Also "MOUNT C: C:\GAMEFOLDER -T CDROM -IOCTL". Seems I'm getting all capitals automatically in Dosbox.

Just a tip: If you play the stock market in this game it will crash when your balance goes over 387 nontillion dollars, but if you keep your balance below that, you can play as long as you like.
Enjoy!

You have to mount the game folder to C:
mount c: d:\games\capitalism
Then you have to mount the same game folder to another drive, but as type of cdrom
mount h: d:\games\capitalism -t cdrom -ioctl
Then you have to change drive to the C drive you mounted
c:
Then launch the game
capmain

I managed to play capitalism in dosbox Linux doing the following (thanks to @Good guy greg)
mount d /home/myuser/ -t cdrom -ioctl
c:
capmain
# Note that /home/myuser is an arbitrary folder that must not contain capitalism CD. Just any folder of your hard drive

Trying to play the game via Dosbox on a laptop without a cd-player, and they ask me to insert the CD.
Have tried to mount a virtual drive via Daemon Tools, but the game will not start, Dosbox just stops.

I found an answer on google for the save game problem on this forum.

Follow these steps with dosbox.
Mount C C:\gamefolder
Mount D D:\ -t cdrom -ioctl
c:
capmain
I have just tested it and succesfully saved a game, quit, quit dosbox, started the game on dosbox again and loaded the saved game. Hopefully it works for you as well.

I have no trouble getting the game to work, but I cant save a game. It just says "not enough memory". It is propably becourse it is mounted as cdrom, but how to get around this?
jkk 2013-02-24 0 point DOS version
I'm using the version from GOG games. I tried mounting it as a CDROM as described above but it didn't work. However, uninstalling it from the C drive and re-installing it on a different drive did work.

I mounted it as a cdrom with dosbox and it worked, however when I try to save games it says "insufficient disk space the game is not saved"
Brmpf 2013-01-17 -1 point DOS version
Just mount it as a CDROM drive in Dosbox, then it will work.
mount d: [yourpath] -t cdrom

type setsound.bat to set up sound. It's the dos versioun so youneed dosbox.
Less cool: it asks for the cd ;)
