Description of Life & Death II: The Brain
Arguable the best doctor games ever produced for the PC (well, Theme Hospital comes close, but that is more of a management game), Life & Death 1 and 2 put you in the role of surgeon who specializes in digestive systems in the first game, and brain surgery in the second. Diagnose patients correctly and perform increasingly difficult more advanced procedures to get promoted.
The games are much celebrated for their strong emphasis on realism (not surprisingly, since their designer is a real doctor). The games also boast high educational value as well, since every time you make mistakes you'll be sent to a classroom to learn what you did wrong. And yes, there IS an end to each of these games-- it just takes a lot of patience, dozens of successful surgeries, and steady hands :)
Thumbs up!

Game crashes whenever I try to perform anything more complex than a subdural hematoma operation.

Hulsie is thinking of the first game. It includes a warning about the game not being for the faint of heart.

Hulsie, The box image you describe sounds like the one I had for the first Life & Death. I may still have the original box packed away somewhere.

The back of the box from the US version really grossed me out as a kid. It depicts a surgeon who has dropped a brain on the floor. I can't find a scan online. The UK box on MobyGames doesn't feature this.

It looks like there are a lot of files missing from this. I found another copy elsewhere and it works just fine.

You don't need a disc. Download Dos-box (dos emulator), mount your harddrive, and run the game using the standard dos commands to open the directory and run the executable file.
If you don't know the few basic commands required to navigate in DOS, you shouldn't be playing these games anyway.
