I have done everything required, but I get this error:
mclNI.cpp(1599):
mCINI::BuildHeritage 0 : (./Data/DefaultGlobal.INI) Initialization failed in heritage when loading file Include.ini
Press Retry for Debug
Then it crashes to desktop

How to install on windows 10
Mount the ISO image, then open it and find setup.exe, right click on it and set windows xp compatibility for the setup and apply. This fixed the issue of setup asking for a windows restart without the game actually being installed. After that you can apply the patch medieval_lords.exe to bin folder of the game and then in the same folder go to data/shader and paste StdMatDX8.fx in there, this worked for me game starts and plays.

Does anyone have an up to date step by step walkthrough to get this game to work on W11?

Great game. Might seem janky in the beginning, especially the indirect combat system (just think of it as a tower defense game with mobile towers being your armies). Be generous with spamming siege engine emplacements later on.
The way cities, settlements and agriculture organically grow and interact is superior to many of those modern city builders that currently flood the market.
Worked for me on Win10 64bit with the fix applied. Max graphics show shadow glitches, but no crashes.
Hope I'm allowed to post this:
Savegames frome each campaign mission (drop them into the game's SAVE folder, then just load one and restart the mission to reset and get the intro cinematics):

The comment of PARAVANTIS is referred to the "Fix" download.
You need to already have the game for it.
I tried it and it worked.

Here is how I managed to get this awesome game working in Windows 10:
1. Download the fix file on this page [edited]
2. Unzip (unrar) the downloaded file. Then unzip the two rar files that are contained in it. One of them is a Medieval_Lords.exe file, the other is a StdMatDX8.fx file.
3. Copy the Medieval_Lords.exe to C:\Program Files\Monte Cristo\Medieval Lords\BIN (or wherever you have installed Medieval Lords, I prefer C:\Games\ for older games), replacing the original Medieval_Lords.exe.
4. Similarly copy StdMatDX8.fx to the C:\Program Files\Monte Cristo\BIN\DATA\SHADER folder.
All done, you can now run the game in Windows 10!
