Asked a friend to run it on Windows XP and as it turns out, multiplayer works there immediately. I wonder whether it's got to do with the OS being 32-bit or XP containing some obscure network protocols that were removed in later Windows versions.

Spent a lot of hours in this game as a kid. I remember that I was able to launch some sort of free roam mode that would simply spawn me in the city, but I can't figure out how it was achievable. I thought that maybe I was able to host multiplayer somehow, but the functions seems to have been always broken.
Maybe it was unlockable after beating the game? Though I doubt it since I recall being able to just fool around the map very early on and it's definitely not a false memory, because I have a very clear recollection of doing that when I got it in 2008.
Anyhow, it runs on Linux through PortProton in Vulkan 1.1, can't open the game on OpenGL and also it takes a moment to load through a black screen, but after that it runs just as I remembered it.

The manual transmission works, but hilariously you won't have any idea about which gear your car is currently in, it's just NOT displayed on the HUD. 'Guess you only have to remember it lmao.

It really SUCKS after the game has finished, the stats will reset back to zero, and there's no chance for us to drive the very last car ("Serpent").

Also the multiplayer mode is NOT WORKING at all, it's just sitting there without any functionality.
