Description of Wibarm

A little-known Japanese import similar to Psychic War (also from Brøderbund) in the cute anime style and console-influenced gameplay, Wibarm is notable for a wide variety of gameplay options. In this futuristic sci-fi game, you control a robot that can transform into a spacecraft a la Thexder, fight hordes of aliens in cool 3D indoors and 2D outdoors. Great fun, although probably too simplistic for hard-core RPGers.

Back during the DOS days, the data disk, you can use SUBST A or B drive to a folder in C:. I believe DOSBox has SUBST as well.

A demo of Wibarm came with my childhood PC. Naturally I played it a ton despite it's 3 minute restriction. On a hunch I always mashed the keyboard as it started up and once and only once the demo started without the timer! I kept the game running as long as I could but inevitably someone else needed the computer.

If anyone has a copy of the DEMO disk I believe it has no copy protection and I'd be happy to open up a debugger and take a stab at disabling the timer.

I suppose you could get ahold of me by writing a comment with a link to a disk image or something and I'll probably see it one day.

My dosbox command line for user disk (i made a folder called userdisk in wibarm folder) as a:
DOSBox.exe c:\games\wibarm\wibarm.com -c "mount a c:\games\wibarm\userdisk -t floppy" -exit -fullscreen

Doesn't run at all :( Just freezes when running wibarm.com. Have the folders set correctly (c:\wibarm) and everything. Too bad, I remember playing this game a lot when I was a kid. Fun game. Good memories.

this game is ported version and original had been released for japanese 8bit computers in 1986.
Arsys Software was one of the most skilled computer game company (though this game was by hands of only 2 programmers) and it was so popular for adopting variable cool robots in games those days.
actually, last years of release of this game was true golden year of japanese 8bit computers.
as Wibaam had been born under such enthusiastic situation. naturally affected by most successful games of the last year, Thexder (variable robot maze shooter) and Xanadu (Dragon Slayer sequel. one of early ARPG but very hard).
additionally, they did great job. it was realtime polygon render in background on slow 4mhz Z80 machine. the achievement caused Game Arts (maker of Thexder. known as company of "killer soft" ) of making Shilpeed (one of fastest realtime full polygon 8bit shooter) in late of the same year.
original had some critical nasty bug, but i hope dos version has not.

Heh, Robotech ripoff... You do know that Robotech is an altered and Americanized version of a Japanese anime series called "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross", yes? So, a ripoff of a ripoff, I suppose.

Anyway, this game is awesome. Played it as a kid and had a lot of fun with it. VERY simple and not going to really challenge any older gamer, but hey, I was only a kid at the time, so... :)
