Star Trek: The Next Generation - Birth of the Federation

Description of Star Trek: The Next Generation - Birth of the Federation
Here is the video game “Star Trek: The Next Generation - Birth of the Federation”! Released in 1999 on Windows, it's still available and playable with some tinkering. It's a strategy game, set in a managerial, sci-fi / futuristic, turn-based, licensed title, 4x, tv series and turn-based strategy themes.

I've played this game since it was first released. It is by far my favorite computer game. However, I do have a problem with it. It has been so long since I've played it that I've completely forgotten HOW to play. I would really appreciate learning how to do so, again!
Thanks.

This is one of my favorite games of all time.
Playing it continuously since release. I bought it several times and still enjoy it like the first. Only of course now I know more about it. :)
It's an 4X strategy game with turn based battles where you give the orders and watch them follow them.
Outside of the battle engine, there is a classic 4X 2D map of the "galaxy".
The size and number of systems isn't as big as some other games, but it is still good.
Several ways to play the game, map size, victory conditions, playable factions, random events on or off. Also there is always the chance of Borg, unless you switch the random events off, or you keep random events on but edit the ini to turn the borg off.
I love this game. I had/have 100s of videos on my main now inactive YouTube channel (guess the name of it), but I have started new channels and one of them has to do strategy games, I recently started playing a let's play of this one, playing as the Klingon.
You can have a look here if you want.

Hmm, I'm an older person and I don't have any idea on how to use the download here, honestly. I downloaded it, extracted the files, and now I'm stumped. I just see two files, with an extension I know nothing about, on a computer with windows 10, and no idea how to get to sweet sweet BOTF action. Where could I find a step by step for dummies? Anyone know?

Thank Bahmumbra for the link.
So i couldn't run either the installer or the game on win11, but the installer he linked actually runs on win11 (and definitely win10 therefore).
It is big but it has several different options to run modded versions of the game. The best one is ultimate mod 5, it basically fixes all the games problems. It will give you options for resolution to install, but for decent size and the older videos in the game, best to run it on 1024x resolution eve4n if your monitor is 1920x1080.
The mod adds lots of ships, and it adds the dominion and other races to the game. I have actually tried the other 2 botf like games being actively developed by fans but this ultimade mod 5 is better than either of them right now.

Worked on linux .. create a 32 bit WINEPREFIX set to Windows95. mdf2iso the stbofed.mdf file and mount the resulting ISO. Install the game and patch in the WINEPREFIX and like SMIRK said, run "ustrek.exe" not the NOCD crack.

@KLIGONS4LYFE When trying to get old games like this to work, in general, try using a virtual machine running an older OS or DOSBox.

For most of these games I am running them on Windows XP 64 in an Oracle VirtualBox. They run great!

I got it to work with the patch and clicking on the ustrek.exe file. Only issue is that the reaction time to the mouse is painfully slow...

There are still sites like armadafleetcommand who have mods and tweaks for the game.

Hi.... I need to know how to run on Android with Exagear....... I have the ISO Extractor, it works with MDF. I used cracked version to make it stop saying "NO CD-ROM FILE FOUND!" I think I did it right....... But to be sure..... How DO you do it?

So I have the original disk for the game, but it lags like CRAZY on my Windows 10 PC. Any advice as to how to make it work? I haven't really been a PC game guy since the early 2000's so I'm not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Got it to launch, but as soon as i went into options or start a new game, the game crashes. I installed using daemon tools lite, then update, then copied cracked file and renamed to trek.exe. Messed with compatibility but no go unfortunately, i think ill stick with Distant Worlds w/ Star Trek Mod thanks.

I've tried burning this to an actual disk in Alcohol 120% format, and I tried converting MDF to ISO. It installed fine, but didn't run. I tried running the game using the 1.02 patch, didn't didn't run. Tried using the NOCD crack included. No dice. I've tried running it under both XP SP3 compatibility mode and 98/Me compatibility.
Any clues on how to get this running?

First of all: I love ancient games, old and a little dusty looking games with outdated graphics but a lot of long term gaming fun.
I wanted to try this one but the game wont start.
I get different feedback after clicking on of three existing exes after extracting and installing (Trek.exe, TREK, ustrek) either I receive "please put the correct cd-rom into the drive" or "mss32.dll is missing, reinstall the game might fix that problem".
Trying to install the patch gets me the feedback to "first install the main game before patching it" - allthough both are in the same folder.
End of the line: I can't play the game.
Any suggestions or help available?
I tried it regularly (win7) as well as in the XP-mode. Results are identical.... :-(((

@peace: MDF / MDS is another format for ISO images. Do some research please.
