How to play The Golf Pro Windows
The game was released on 4 CDs, the first two discs include Hilton Head Course, the other two discs include St. Mellion Course.
The game cannot be installed on modern 64-bit systems because it was designed for 16-bit variants of Windows 95 & 98 systems. But it may be possible to run the game on modern systems by doing the next steps:
- You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools Lite
- Create a folder
GOLFPRO
(for example) in any place on your hard drive. Mount the disc image of CD1 and copy all files fromGOLFPRO
folder inside the disc intoGOLFPRO
folder on your hard drive. Do the same with CD2, CD3 and CD4, copying all files fromGOLFPRO
folder intoGOLFPRO
folder on your hard drive. Copy files insideGOLFPRO
folder, not the folder itself! When asked about replacing files, you can agree or not - Unpack
Speech fix
archive intoGOLFPRO
folder on your hard drive - Copy files from NoCD archive into same folder, agree to replace original files
- Open
GOLFPRO
folder on your hard drive, find GOLFPRO.ini file and open it in text editor. In the item[Installed]
in the lineCourses=
, add01,02
. And in the lineLessons=
replace0
to1
. Should look like this:
[Installed]
Swings=
Courses=01,02
Data=1
Lessons=1
Sound=2
Now launch the game in Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode and play. The game with NoCD should work on modern systems, but the game crashes on some systems. The game with NoCD works the best on Windows XP SP3 32-bit, so if you cannot run the game on modern systems - try to run it on Virtual Machine with Windows XP.
The instructions and NoCD was taken from this thread, check it for more details (it is on Russian, use the translation machine)
Notes:
- The game has a fixed 640x480 screen resolution, it cannot be changed
- It is not possible to install the game on modern systems since it is 16-bit app designed for Windows 95 & 98 systems. However, you can try to use winevdm app, it is special utility that allows to emulate 16-bit apps in 64-bit systems. Here's the detailed guide how to use winevdm utility
- Alternative method is to run the game on Virtual Machine with old Windows
- It’s interesting that the installer for the demo version of the game works on 64-bit systems, and the demo version installs on modern systems without any problems
