How to play Back to Gaya Windows

Notes:

  • The game works on DirectX 8, so if you're using Windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 - you need to enable DirectPlay: Go to Control Panel, and select 'Programs'. Select 'Turn Windows features on and off', click on 'Legacy Components' and check the box 'DirectPlay'. Select OK, once the installation is done, restart your computer
  • It is recommended to install all versions of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and NET Framework for the correct work of the game. Also it is recommended to install K-Lite Codec Pack for the correct work of in-game videos
  • The game uses the Xvid video codec for in-game movies, if you see only a black screen instead of video - install Xvid 1.0.3 from the disc. Also, the version of Xvid used by the game may conflict with newer versions of Xvid in the K-Lite Codec Pack; so if you have the K-Lite Codec Pack installed but you do not see the video - uninstall the K-Lite Codec Pack and install Xvid 1.0.3 from the disc (we also added the file to our website)
  • English version of the game was using old Tages DRM protection, and Tages drivers doesn't work correctly on modern systems, there were many reports that old Tages drivers can break the system. Luckily, executable file from Polish DRM-Free version is compatible with English version; it has no DRM protection and can be used as NoCD for English version. To use it simply copy BackToGaya_Release.exe from the archive and put in game folder, agree to replace original file
  • Alternatively, if the game with NoCD doesn't work - you can use Virtual Machine with Windows XP or older
  • The game has no framerate limit, and if the game runs above 120 FPS then the car physics breaks. If you have that problem or any other similar problems with the game - cap the game's framerate to 60 or 120 FPS, through the video card panel or through one of the apps that allows to limit the framerate
  • You can change the Field of View (FOV) of the game by editing the config-files, check this guide for details
  • And you can run the game in Widescreen mode by editing the same config-files, here's the guide. But please note that some UI elements may be partially off-screen. Also, you can run the game in Windowed mode by editing the same config-files, here's the guide
  • Russian version was released on 2 discs instead of 1, but it has the exact same content as other versions. Russian publisher just split the game to 2 discs to sell it for bigger price. Be careful, Russian version was using infamous StarForce DRM that can break your system, make sure to use NoCD before the first launch!

This is a stuck/lost game. The developers want you to be lost, upset, and always googling guides to be able to progress.

Can we just make a pile of all games like this and just burn them? Theres nothing valuable about being stuck in a game. Nothing.

Why has no game of 150,000 games in existence never had a solution for this?

You force yourself to try a game nobody has ever played, just to discover theres a reason nobody has ever played it, and it breaks my heart every single time!

Why cant developers ever just fix these small issues? They instead go on to make new games... Its like what?? Who is the clown who said gaming is an art form?

We made the pyramids, now thats impressive, there has never been a videogame thats even 1% close to being a good videogame. NEVER EVER IN EXISTENCE.

@TOM Nice find, Tom! I checked exe-file from Polish version, and it works with English version, indeed. I added that moment to the Notes.
And Polish version that we uploaded is from that CyberMycha CD you mentioned, yes

Specifically I mean "BackToGaya_Release.exe".

The Polish version (at least the CyberMycha release - you can find it at Internet Archive) doesn't need the original disc, so you can use the .exe from this version as a NoCD patch too. I used it for my English copy, so I can play it on Windows 10 now.
