Gold Rush!
DOS - 1988
Also released on: Mac - Amiga - Apple IIgs
Description of Gold Rush!
One of Sierra's best but least-known games, Gold Rush! is exceptional not only for its real-world puzzles and intriguing plot, but also because it's one of the first adventure games that are truly replayable: as a brash young New Yorker setting out to find your lost brother, choose your path to fame and fortune in California from 3 very different paths, each with its own obstacles and dangers.
Without a doubt, this is one of my most favorite adventure games of all time. Two thumbs up!

For those people struggling to get this game working, try running in ScummVm. That will be the easiest way by far. You can also use DosBox, but it's a bit more complex. Dosbox has the ability to reduce cpu cycles, so the fixes mentioned for that would not be needed. If you want to run on actual hardware you will likely want to use 486 or older hardware and something like Moslo.exe to reduce the cpu cycles.

Excellent game. I had this on the Atari ST as a child and found it to be very fun and educational. The multiple methods of getting to California made for some great replayability too.

it won't install. Says the game version is not compatible with the version of the windows.

Fixed it - all you have to do is play the game at Normal or Slow speed. That seemed to make the game's Timer run properly and should be able to get you through any sections of the story where it's required.

Regarding the timer question: I believe this is a known bug in the game where you can't change the speed of the game. I believe this happens a few times throughout the game. Very annoying.

So I guess the only solution still is to write it to a floppy and play it on a system with a bootleg copy of Windows 98 or something?

Even with Dosbox I can't get this game to work right. At the start of the game there are several things that happen to progress the story based upon a timer. For whatever reason that timer doesn't seem to work on newer computers even under dosbox. Without it you can't get out of the first area of the game.
