Bought this game and the sequel Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne on steam a few weeks ago. After trying to get it to work for over an hour, I gave up and sent Steam a refund request for both games, little did I know that after I was done trying to get both games to work, I shut them down. The first one went fine, but little did I know that the when I tried closing Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne, it didn't close apparently. I didn't notice, but when I got the reply from Steam regarding my request for a refund, it was DENIED!! I couldn't understand, the reason they gave was that I had played the game past the 2 hour limit to get a refund. which doesn't make sense since I NEVER actually PLAYED EITHER game. But according to my pc, it had been running for 47 hours, so because I had bought the games as a PACKAGE, they denied my refund request for BOTH games.

So now I have both games that I can't as of yet, actually PLAY! I was really hoping I'd found another place to get the game, until I saw that the game wasn't available here, and it just tells you to go to Steam. Not happy with Steam atm.

If you're wondering why I bothered to type all that out on a site that ISN'T Steam, it's because this site LINKS to the Steam version, and I wanted folks to be aware that you need to be ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that the Steam version works on your PC, because Steam's refund request system uses a REALLY SHITTY AI, that doesn't understand when you try to explain why you're requesting a refund beyond it's pre-programmed rules. So when I told them that I never actually PLAYED the freaken game, and it's just that it didn't shut down when I tried, the AI basically had a "DERP" moment and refused my request for a refund on BOTH games, even though it was only MP 2 that I had accidentally left running past the 2 hour deadline.

Long story short, MAKE SURE YOU CAN RUN IT BEFORE, BEFORE, BEFORE....YOU BUY THIS GAME ON STEAM!!!

Just to confirm - in Mexico it is also not available for purchase. Just MP2 and MP3. I wonder whats the reasoning behind it...

Max Payne is not available on Steam in Germany and also not on the index, therefore probably abandonware.

Unfortunately, there should be a fix to make the game playable since for some odd reason, Windows 10 and above isn't allowing the game to play on Steam without Direct X 8, but even if you install Direct X8 it still doesn't work. Such a bummer

Bummed that I missed out on getting these originally from here, but now's the time to bring them back. They're not available directly from Rockstar, but they are on Steam... for a limited time. Telling from R-star's treatment of the GTA trilogy remakes recently, they are planning to publish a remake of Max Payne 1 soon and will most likely delist the original version from Steam. Since it's already down from their main website, it's best to have Max Payne up in it's original glory. This game is a piece of history, for gameplay and storytelling, and I don't trust whatever R-star is gonna do in regards to remaking it, no matter how much "polish" there might be.

follow this guide if u have a 3rd gen ryzen or later or the game wont work,,,,

Patch so simple I'll put it here like this, although I can't test on a real AMD Ryzen 3rd gen, but tested in different methods the behaviour with other test patches on mine.

The lazy patch mode:
1. Open rlmfc.dll on and hex editor
2. Go to offset 0x269A0
3. Replace the bytes starting from here with "B8 11 00 00 00 90"
- Note, replace, not insert! Whatever hex editor you use, be sure it's in overwrite mode!

This lies to the program, despite detection, it has MMX and TSC present.
If for, some odd reason TSC is not present, replace with "B8 01 00 00 00 90" instead.
It's still fresh this patch, and I'd like feedback if that's sufficient to overcome the issue.

Here's a working solution for windows 10 pro --
1. mount the ISO using daemon tools
2. go to the DVD drive / open the BIN folder and run demo32.exe
3. copy the cracked maxpayne.exe file and overwrite the original one in the install directory
4. set the properties to run as admin and compatibility for windows 98.

It works!! yaaaayyyyyyy

I previously had it working on Windows 7 with the method using a bat file ( "start/affinity 1 MaxPayne.exe" ) but that doesn't seem to work in Windows 10.

Hi,

To install MP1in Windows 10 i had to change the compatibility option (windows 98). Now i can launch the setup but the game crashed (come back to desktop) when he load the the game (about 50% loading). Someone have the same problem ?

Playing Max Payne back then at nights in a quiet room with SoundBlaster on, gave me the thrill. The story, gameplay and the matrix effect made me addicted to Payne.
