It may not be abandonware, but the base game is now free on Steam.
However, there's a multitude of in game purchases, it's full of cheaters and griefers plus many of the players multibox (running multiple games simultaneously).
Check out the reviews over on Steam, in particular read Obey the Fist, whose main aim is to post reviews of games he thinks are rip off's, badly optimised, using old assets or just plain not worth the effort. The original game is approaching 30 years old.

I got the game when you had to buy the base game. I only played it for 90 minutes and then dropped it due in part to getting too much grief from other players who just wouldn't let me advance in the game.
There are other space oriented games like X4: Foundations + DLC or X3: Terran Conflict + DLC that are worth getting when they are on sale. There are also earlier versions that are quite cheap, even when not on sale.

As much as I would've absolutely loved to have found out that CCP had decided to release a couple of their really old releases, clients, server files and all, this is not the case. EVE Online is still actively published by CCP Games, its servers are still live, it is by definition not abandonware and it shouldn't be here

Second that, this is not abandonware per se, and cannot be played without legacy servers...
