i grew up on this game. i still own the entire complete original boxset with all documents! there is no literal end game other than being able to make it to top retirement ranking -- near impossible. i learned more about history, geography, and mechanics than school ever taught me just by playing this game! I have the dos-ibm version as well as the NES version. about a decade ago someone ported this to modern PC calling it "Pirates2" there were minimal UI enhancements but the game was exactly the same otherwise. 10/10 great game! if you loved this try out Sword of the Samurai by Sid Meiers also.

this was also available on the atari st .. used to load it from floppy discs, took ages but was worth it. I eventually memorised where all the treasures were only needed the first piece of the map. gotta admit the graphics look awful now...

Easily one of the best games in video history. This, along with Star Control II will give you weeks of entertainment for free.

Never too many screenshots! I loved this game... spent every hour sailing the Caribbean. The manual with texts from historian PhD E. Bever was great too. I wish more games nowadays had PhDs as advisors.
I still can hear the funny sound the wind and waters made on my computer when sailing against the currents, which were also simulated with scientific accuracy, including the west-to-east stationary stream. Every bit of this game I loved. If anything, I would have liked my ship to sail a little faster, for I spent hours of my life staring at an almost entirely blue screen, daydreaming with Pirates in the last half millenium. The game also sported various different campaigns set in different times, with abundant literature and a number of possible outcomus depending upon how you lived your life as a Pirate. There is a modern remake which I am playing now... Mr. Bever is gone, but the graphics are way better and keeps one hokked to the computer as during childhood. Don't play it if you have a thesis to write... ;)

One of the greatest games ever made. I still play the NES version, which is a direct port, with slightly enhanced graphics, of this version probably three or four times a year. It never gets old.

The new version from a few years ago is very good too, but I keep coming back to this one.

I love this game so much I actually wrote a guide for it on

You seem to be confused. The above graphics are from the original Pirates from 1987, not 1994. '94 was Pirates Gold with VGA graphics.

The original '87 version was the first PC game I ever bought, and still one of my favorites.

This game is pretty good, but different for the PSP.

I'ts a good thing every game here has a great description. Never seen pirates with these graphics, only the next version they released in the 90's.
